Can bowel cancer be present with normal calprotectin levels?

Hi everyone,

I know nobody can possibly give me a diagnosis online & is the job of my GP, but I was wondering if it was possible to have normal levels of calprotectin but still have bowel cancer?

I've been experiencing a lot of symptoms lately that match with bowel cancer, I've had a physical examination and a prostate exam, I've had bloods done being celiac screening and the whole usual package of full blood count, liver and kidney function tests all that jazz, and all the urine tests done, and a calprotectin stool test, all of which were normal.

What's the likelihood that calprotectin is normal with people with bowel cancer?

I'm still going to push my GP for further testing because somethings definitely not right.

thanks

  • Hello JoeFromPlanetMonday,

A big welcome to our forum! This is a very interesting question but I am afraid it is one for the experts... Perhaps you could give your GP a call and ask whether they could tell you more about the link between calprotectin levels and bowel cancer? You could also try giving our nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. They won't be able to help with your diagnosis, but they may be able to tell you more about what they are looking for when they test calprotectin levels. It's good news though that all these tests came back normal.

I am keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine!

    Best wishes,

  • Hi there,

I know you posted a wee while ago but I was wondering how you are doing? Your post caught my eye because I also have a normal faecal calprotectin level but I am convinced I have bowel cancer. Did you ever get an answer? Can FCP be normal with cancer?

Either way I hope you got some answers and are doing well.

  • I would also like to know. Just had a calprotection stool test and CEA blood test- all clear. But that doesn't explain my symptoms!
