Mole appointment and neck lump

Hello,

I went to the doctors last week to get a couple of moles checked.  One was OK but the other needed a second opinion as there was a few different colours and they're concerned about a darker area.  At the end of the appointment I also asked the GP about a lump I'd noticed on the right side of my neck but was told it's glands / from when you have a virus as a child. I'm 28 and have only recently noticed the lump - I also thought glands were more at the front of your neck?

I got home and did the worst thing and went onto Google.  I am really worried that the lump is lymph nodes and the mole (on my lower leg) is cancerous which has spread.   Is this possible or would the lump not appear on my neck first if it had spread?

I was referred to dermatology for the mole within the 2 week timeframe and have my appointment next Friday (the 13th..).

I am such a worrier and wanted to hear if others had experienced similar or know whether the two could be linked.

Thanks so much,

Kathryn

  • Hi Kathryn,

Welcome to Cancer Chat and I'm sorry to read about your worries. I know it's always unsettling when there is this uncertainty and waiting for further information.

I would encourage you to focus more on what you've been told so far by the doctor, and to avoid Googling things. This is rarely helpful and the information is often irrelevant or outdated, which can only increase worry.

You can use your appointment as an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. In the meantime try to keep busy to keep your mind off things if you can.

If you'd like to talk anything through with our nurses prior to your appointment, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
