Colon cancer, whats the first signs.

Hey,

Just looking for some advice. Since the start of the year around the time of the 1st UK lockdown, my bowel habits changed rapidly. Since March its been constant runny bowel movents and sticky hard to flush. I get really bad abdominal pains that have me doubled over sometimes.

Finally got a docs appointment few weeks ago, blood and stool samples taken. Both bloods and stool had a very high white blood cell count so doc is taking more bloods in 6 weeks time and put me on colofac for IBS.

Since that appointment I have been getting pain just under my rib cage at the centre and have noticed a long lump that hurts like hell when I touch it or when I breathe in and out. It also feels worse when sitting down.

Just wondering if anyone has had something similar and if it is something I should go back to docs with?

  • Hello,

everything you describe indicates an inflamed bowel which could be caused by so many things other than cancer, which can give severe pain.As a stage 4 bowel and liver cancer survivor,l had no pain,no bloat,no changed bowel movements, and only got checked out because l spotted Black stale blood in my stool and realised the implications of such..Its good to see you have taken the step of seeing your doctor, unlike all too many that come here looking for blind diagnosis from in the dark strangers rather than seeing their GP.

l hope things improve for you soon,

                                                                                                                   David

  • I was diagnosed with S4 colon cancer in July. Since November last year my bowel movements changed to predomantly runny, sticky poo that smelt vile. I dismissed everything as I'm 43, fit and play sports regularly. As this year went on I started to get some bad pains in my abdomen, but nothing that had me doubled over, and more and more blood in the toilet. I was also having to go to the loo several times a day especially after eating. Eventually I plukced up the corrage to go and get checked out and an endoscopy showed that I had a large tumour in my large intestines that was causing a blockage.
All the blood tests I had showed no indication of cancer and the docs were very surprised to find the tunour.

I never had a lump that I could feel, nor did I have pain with breathing or sitting. I'd suggest you go back to see your doc. It may be nothing but to find such things out is their job and what they are there for. Don't do what I did and dismiss things until its too late.

  • Thanks for your advice David it's appreciated. Hope things are well for you now.

  • Thanks for your advice it's appreciated. The lump is new only noticed it couple nights ago when I was sitting watching a film then out of nowhere got a pain just under my rib cage and when I felt it noticed it was a lump and hurt more as I touched it. Pain still there so will probably phone gp tomorrow when they open and see if I can get seen earlier. I'm 33 so probably worrying more than I should and as David said in his post its probably going to be and inflamed bowel.

I had one black stool at the start of the symptoms but haven't had any blood or black stools since that 1 black bowel movement way back in March.

Hope all is well with you now too.

    Thanks again

  • Hi

Sign's differ for each person and in my case after having it twice I had different symptoms both times.

Gp's know best, I would go back and make them aware of your new symptoms just so if they are concerned they can refer you.

Bowel cancer symptoms are the same as less serious bowel problems but still worrying until we know what it is causing them.

  • Hello gruntifen,

i'm very sorry to disturb you, but in you message you said "only got checked out because i spotted black stale blood".

I have had this for 2 weeks in my stool and I am starting to really worry.

    thanks

  • Hello Rail,

l had black spots running through my stools like dotted raisins, nothing like what you are showing, which looks like congealed blood with mucous, which is obviously coming from an open lesion within the bowel, which could be caused by a number of issues. You obviously have an issue that needs to be investigated and treated,so please do not wait and get it seen too,
