Changes to mole during/after pregnancy

So I had a freckle on my boob during pregnancy and at some point either during or after pregnancy it seems or of changed, it is a strange shape, bigger and the edges are irregular, it's flat and smooth, I went to the doctor who said they didn't think it looked cancerous but will ever me on for further testing due to it being nice and changing. I had my dermatology appointment and she wants to remove it... she said it doesn't stand out to her as cancerous and that if it had always been there she wouldn't be removing it but because it's new she wants to remove it and make sure it isn't starting to change, I feel absolutely worried sick! Would you take what the dermatologist said as reassuring? I don't know wether that's something she would say lightly or wether she genuinely thinks it's fine and that is precautionary more than anything... I have a 4 month old baby and it just makes me feel so anxious! Any advice would be so welcome xx

  • Hello Meggleigh and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry for the concern this mole is causing but if you can do try and trust what the dermatologist has said as they are an expert in this field and will do what is best for you.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in similar situations will offer their support and advice to you soon but if you'd like to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    All the best,

  • Hi - this happened to me when I had a new mole appear during pregnancy (over 20 years ago – am a granny now). Mole was removed after I'd given birth (it was on my tummy!) and was dysplastic so displaying change but not cancerous just with potential to become cancerous in the future. I'd take what the dermatologist says as reassuring and it's good that you are getting this sorted. My baby would have been a similar age when my mole got removed. Wishing you well. X

  • Oh wow that must be what they are checking mine for, it's just so worrying I've been making myself feel sick where I'm just so anxious! I know it sounds silly as the dermatologist said it doesn't stand out to her as a skin cancer but i am such a worrier! So concerned about how long the wait for results is too :( xx

  • Hi - if they thought it was quick changing and cancerous now they would have said. You'd have had it removed/biopsied sooner if so. They want to be sure about what it is but really sounds like they are not thinking it is a melanoma now just maybe dysplastic and needs checking just in case. So being cautious. Try not to worry. The odds really are on your side here. Worrying just wastes time. Hard not to. Best distract yourself as much as possible. Wishing you well with all that. X

  • Thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate your quick reply to me and for making me think a bit more rationally! xx
