Anxious about breast clinic referral

Hi all,

I know lots of people have posted similar posts on here but I just wanted to get some advice/ support as feeling very anxious about a breast clinic referral.

I found a hard lump on the upper side of my left breast yesterday morning. I managed to get in to see the GP very quickly thankfully. She said it moved around nicely and didn't think it was anything serious but has referred me to the breast clinic and said I should hear quickly in 2-3 weeks. I'm 36 and this is also a few days before period so not sure if it might be hormonal but not had anything like it before and GP didn't ask about that.

I think this is made worse by the fact my sister in law sadly passed away from secondary breast cancer last year at the age of 44. It almost makes me jump to the worst conclusion!

I have an almost 3 year old so want to stay positive but finding it hard not to think about it all the time!

I'd love to hear from anyone who has been/ or is going through something similar.

  • Hello Jem20

I'm sorry to hear that you're waiting on an appointment at breast clinic at the moment. I know that this period of waiting for that initial appointment can be worrying and as you've lost your sister in law to breast cancer it's understandable that you're feeling more anxious about things.

It's not uncommon for women to have lumpy breasts and this can indeed change during your cycle but the important things is that you've noticed it and seen your GP.
I'm sure that your little one keeps you busy but I would say try to keep yourself occupied and take each day as it comes. Thinking on things will leave you feeling more worried. It might help to try and keep in mind that the majority of women who attend breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer.

I'd also suggest giving our team of nurses a call. I'm sure they will be able to offer some advice and reassurance whilst you're waiting for you appointment. If you'd like to speak to them, they are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully you will have some news on your appointment soon. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

Thank you for responding and for your kind words.

I may well give the helpline a call next week if I still feel anxious.

    Best wishes
