Referral to breast clinic

Hello everyone,

I'm still a little in shock after going to my gp yesterday with a solid and slightly painful area on the outside of my right breast and being referred for an ultrasound and potential biopsy.

he suggested I would be seen quickly and likely receive a phone call in the coming day or so re: the appointment but I haven't heard anything today and frankly I am torturing myself with the potential outcomes. I'm trying to stay off google and remind myself that at 31 chances are it's not sinister.

I have told one friend who has offfered to come to the appt with me (not even sure if that is allowed).

im based in Edinburgh and hoping this wonderful online community might be able to help me understand the timescales and how the process works.

wishing you all the best,

Rosie.

  • [@bd24601]‍  and [@bethan98]‍ i can't believe the waiting times you have mentioned - that is just criminal if there is something wrong. My fingers are tightly crossed for you both and I really hope everything is ok and you do get seen sooner rather than later xxx

i hasn't realised waiting times we're that long in wales - I'm so glad I live in Scotland. Xxx

  • What part of wales are you from?  im in swansea. I was scolling through Facebook this morning and an mp had put a post up regarding hospital waiting times and if anyone was having trouble being seen then to message him. so iv sent an email to him. hopefully he will have some advice or can do something for me.

@rosie1989 Exactly. i know it will probably be nothing. but what if it actually is and its been left for so long. i think its ridiculous how our lives are being played with

  • the MP has emailed back and is taking it straight to the health minister! hopefully i will hear something soon

  • I'm in North Wales. When i rang the doctor to see if the appointment was right as it seemed so far away, she said it was a positive thing i got saw before Christmas (!). She said i did well to get an appointment this side of Christmas and try not to worry (easier said than done).

I also asked the doctor what do i do if new symptoms arrive etc whilst I'm waiting but she said that she cant get me seen quicker so no need to make an appointment with her again just take pain relief if needed.....and try not to worry (!).

So just hanging about now, waiting. In one mind i keep thinking there's nothing wrong and I'm worrying about nothing but then the slightest twinge and then I worry again .....

  • Waiting is horrible isn't it?

[@bethan98]‍  hope your MP can sort it out for you.

I phoned the clinic this week and they were very understanding and apologetic. The 2 week urgent referrals are more like 8 or 9 weeks at the moment, I should hear when my appointment is about 2 weeks before the date. Hopefully I'll get seen this year but not sure!

At least I am sleeping a bit better as my doc has prescribe tablets for anxiety.

  • the waiting is awful isn't it. And we really shouldnt be waiting so long to get answers. especially when it can be life changing

  • Hi

I live in South Wales too and have waited a total of 7 weeks to be seen at the breast clinic after an urgent referral which was meant to be within 10 days. I had a mammogram on 19th October but only went to the clinic on 4th November. They did an exam and an ultrasound then said they needed to take some biopsies of the lump as it was very suspicious. I was then seen again by the consultant who has squeezed me in to a fully booked clinic on Monday to give me the results and discuss a treatment plan as they are almost certain it is cancer and will need to start treatment as soon as possible. This has frightened the life out of me as I am now wondering if it has spread in this time I have had to wait as I have pains in my arm and back as well as a constant headache. I know it could very well be my mind working overtime with the shock but I do agree that the waiting times for something like this are awful and something needs to be done. I hope you get seen soon ladies and please keep on chasing them until you get in.

  • Will be thinking of you tomorrow. Please let us know how you get on.

The waiting times are very worrying and cause alot of stress to all involved. I agree, something needs to be done about it.

Sending positive vibes and love your way xx
