Why biopsy lymph nodes when thyroid nodules are benign?

Hey

just wondering if someone can offer me some clarity.

In August I went to the drs after I found a lump in my neck that remained for a couple of months.

They did a biopsy and US scan. It showed thyroid nodule that was benign.

However, the look of the nodule was still concerning so they did another biopsy and US.

Despite it coming back benign again, in that scan the radiographer could also see at least two other lumps behind the first one. The dr described them as abnormal lymph nodes in L4 and L6. He has ordered a CT scan which I haven't had yet and I had to go back on Friday to have the lymph nodes biopsied. They couldn't get to the one in L6 but managed to get something from the one in L4.

The only info I have from the scan itself is that 'it looked cystic'.

Is it possible to have thyroid cancer alongside a benign thyroid nodule?

And also how long does it take to review a lymph node biopsy?

  • Hi LivingstoneB and welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure what time you're having your lymph nodes biopsied tomorrow but I hope it goes well and that it won't be long before the results are back.

Understandably you have a few questions playing on your mind at the moment. Unfortunately I can't answer these but our team of cancer nurses may be able to help so if you'd like to have a chat with them they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.
