2 week referral - Mole

Hello,

First time posting on this...and worried sick!

Today (26/10/20) I booked an appointment with my GP to look at a mole on my chest. No real reason to do this, more for peace of mind. I think it's been there for about 6 months.

When the GP looked at it he said "that's nothing to worry about" He then turned to the medical student who was also in the room and said  "we won't even use the Dermatoscope."

He was then talking to the student about this and said "in fact just to be sure we will use the Dermatoscope."

After taking the pictures which where to be sent to the Dermatologist he showed me the photo and said "under the microscope it looks even more normal, nothing to worry about." He said he would send the photo to the dermatologist and I would only hear back if there is an issue which he said there woudnt be.

Anyway, later this evening I did indeed receive a phone call from my GP saying the dermatologist had got back to him and if it is showing to be slightly assymetric so I woud be referred in the next two weeks! This was obviously a massive shock particularly considering how sure the GP was that the mole was normal!

He did say on the phone that although this is a two week referral I should try not worry as it is just to be on the safe side and that his gut feeling is there is nothing sinister!

Despite his positive outlook I am completely devastated! Why would I have to have a 2 week referral if nothing is wrong?

Also I have seen on previous posts that people don't have the Dermatoscope procedure until this referral ...well I have already had it so what will I expect during my referral appointment?

I am worried sick. It's all I can think about.

Please does anybody have any experiences of this? If the Dermatoscope has already been carried out does this mean it's a foregone conclusion and not good news?

Many Thanks,

  • Hi Laura,

Really good you're getting this checked out. GP has to warn if suspect for melanoma. Doesn't mean it definitely is. Mine wasn't and like you I had forgotten to do checks/area not seen sunlight for decades. It was getting a horrid tingling sensation that got me to GP. I really did fear the worst and GP couldn't reassure me. I kept trying to say well maybe it's just.. Best not to worry too much at this stage. Important thing is you've seen GP and have got a referral so are taking action now. (Totally sympathise about the eyesight by the way!)

Handy tip – when you go to the hospital wear some decent underwear just in case you get sent to body photography (they like to photograph lesions they are going to remove beforehand so if it is melanoma they can be sure of margins). I found the photography embarrassing and I'd left the house in such a hurry that day I wasn't at all well dressed. Not saying they are going to photograph your pants it's just while standing under the spotlights so that specialist medical photographer could photograph lesions I felt somewhat exposed.

You've done well getting yourself checked out now. Give yourself brownie points for that. Please don't beat yourself up at all. Wishing you well and sending hugs X

  • Hi Laura,

I too was worried sick when I was urgently referred a couple of weeks ago, convinced myself it was cancer and have been on google EVERYDAY!! This done me no favours at all!

The only positive from searching google was I found this forum and why I posted on here for some advice/ support which was greatly received.

The advice you are getting is absolutely correct, just because you have been urgently referred does not mean it definitely is something bad.

I have literally just got back from my urgent referral today and I was in and out within 10mins. The dermatologist asked me a number of questions, measured the mole, examined it with a dermoscope and said she was happy with it. She advised to keep an eye on it (monthly photos) and if I noticed any significant change then to book an appointment with GP. I left with a leaflet about skin protection in the sun & signs to look out for.

I know it is a scary time when you receive these letters but as previous people have said it doesn't necessarily mean you have skin cancer they just want to get you in early to have a look ans hopefully rule it out.

Fingers crossed you are all ok.

  • Hi - that's great news. And thank you so much for posting an update on here. It really helps!

  • Oh I'm glad you have had it all okay

I am still waiting for a appointment and looking at it tonight and taking more photos to compare i think it has went more black (its 4 colors)

Will ring my gp on Monday morning to see what is going on?!?  I know covid but within 2 weeks doesn't look like its going to happen?  Surely I should have had a letter by now?  Gp was 4th nov so 11 days and counting

Trying to keep busy and not think of it but its there in the background waiting impatiently

From what I can see they only have a clinic on Thursdays so heres hoping

Not sure how much longer I can take the stress /anxiety of waiting while pretending im ok so my children don't know

  • I'm going to see the dermatologist tomorrow for a two week referral appointment, when I saw the GP she said there were changes beneath and the lesion is asymmetric, she said she would tell me if she thought it was anything sinister but wanted to be 100% sure and was referring me quickly. Ive worried ever since but good to read positive posts and that it is routine.
