Atypical fine needle aspiration results

Hi, I'm 38 years old and found a lump in my breast 4 weeks ago, I was referred by my go to the breast clinic and my appointment last week, they performed an ultrasound with no imaging results, so did a fine need aspiration, I received a phone call today as the results have come through as atypical, which needs further investigation, I've got an appointment tomorrow to have a mammogram as this wasn't done before due to my age, they will also be performing a biopsy, has anyone ever had an atypical FNA result and what was the outcome?

im trying to stay positive, but my mind is going in to overdrive.

    Hi Becky,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear that your results have come back as atypical. This is not all that unusual. Many people either get an atypical or inconclusive result and, these need further tests. I know that this is frustrating, but it is important to getan accurate diagnosis at the outset.

Results are varied - some good, some bad. It is impossible to say until you get the results of your biopsy. These normally take 1-2 weeks to come through.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Here's hoping for good news!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

I went back yesterday and had another ultrasound and mammogram which did not show anything, aparantly I have dense breasts, they didn't perform the biopsy as they wanted the consultant who did the FNA to do it and she was away, I've been booked in for this Tuesday coming again to have the core biopsy and a breast MRI, the nurse explains that there were some cell changes in my FNA results, however they could not be sure if these are cancerous or not, which is why they will be doing every test until they have a definitive answer as to what the lump in my breast is, I am very glad that they are doing everything to find out what it is and not risking just discharging me, I suppose the waiting is just now part of the process xx

    Hi Becky,

It is good news that your mammogram and ultrasound yesterday didn't show anything untoward. I am glad to hear that you are to have an MRI and a core needle biopsy on Tuesday. It is unfortunate  that you'll have more waiting for results, but I agree with you that you are fortunate that they are doing all they can to get an accurate diagnosis for you.

I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for good news.
    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
