Biopsy/Surgical Removal of Subungual Melanoma

Hi all,

I was recently referred for a biopsy on a possible subungual melanoma on my left foot.

However, I have not been able to book an appointment online, even months in advance, and the dermatology department at a hospital in London say they are overbooked for weeks due to COVID 19 and were not able to confirm any availability over the phone. I've emailed my GP and called other Trusts in London but have not been able to secure an appointment.

I'm anxious because the prognosis and survival rate for this type of cancer is poor primarily because of delays in accessing treatment. Does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to pay privately for a biopsy without health insurance?

Any advice would be really helpful!

Best regards,

Paul

  • Hello Paul

I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems with booking a dermatology appointment at the moment. It's understandable that you're feeling concerned about the situation.

I'm afraid that I really don't know how much a private consultation would cost. It may be that you'd have to ring a few local providers to find that information out.

You mentioned that you've contacted your GP and I presume that you've not had any other guidance from them about booking an appointment. If you're able to attend an appointment at short notice then it may be worth getting in touch with your local hospital and asking if they have a cancellation list and explaining you would be available should someone else not be able to attend. Alternatively you could raise your concerns with your local PALS office who may be able to offer some support.

I do hope that you get an appointment arranged soon.

  • Hi Paul

Theres a long running thread on here for people who have / are having this biopsy (check the thread in my post history)

I looked locally when mine was delayed (Manchester area) and struggled to find a private dermatologist who would do this - you may have more luck in London though.

  • Hi Jenn,

Thanks so much for the useful advice and for getting back so quickly!

I contacted the hospital and they had a last minute cancellation, so fortunately I'll get to see a consultant dermatologist on Monday.

    Warm regards,
