Core biopsy

Hi. I had an appointment today for a large lump which I initially thought was blocked ducts from breastfeeding. I was found to have several cysts which they aspirated but they also saw an 'echo' and they mentioned a possible 'nodule'. As such I had a core biopsy. I watched on the screen and when the needle went into the area in question (which appeared to be solid and immovable) it popped, and you could see liquid swirling around. They seemed a little surprised by this. They took the biopsy and went back in another two times but didn't really tell me anything. I have to wait 2 weeks for results but all I can think is if that was cancerous, has the biopsy made things worse by popping it and potentially allowing it to spread? Freaking out a bit and can't find anything online about hard lumps popping and releasing liquid (although found an article citing risk of spread from biopsies which hasnt helped my anxiety). Has anyone come across this? Thanks.

  • Hello Stac

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some health concerns recently which have resulted in you needing a breast biopsy.

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your question about the lump popping but I'm sure if you gave our team of nurses a call they're be able to help with some information and support whilst you're waiting for your results. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

In the meantime can I suggest giving Google a wide berth. There's a lot of inaccurate and scary information on line which won't give answers to your personal situation but will leave you feeling more anxious about things. Try to take each day as it comes and keep in mind that the majority of women who attend breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer.

    Best wishes,
