Life with no pancreas

Hey all,

You can find my story here :) as I think I was in the wrong subtopic!

www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../numerous-ipmn

MDT news came today and again bitter sweet news.

I have 6 BD-IPMNs all over my pancreas! The largest in 4.2cm x 3.4cm and my case has again been escalated to the Cental Surgery MDT to decide my next steps but the gastro thinks they will recommend to have my full pancreas removed.

Zero absolutely zero signs of cancer but I am in a high risk bracket due to the large IPMN .

I am not looking for anyone to tell me if it's going to be ok anymore as I have passed that stage and maybe  I can count myself as a lucky one compared to others.

What I would really like if possible for others to help me understand what life might be like after completely pancreas removal ? I am/was a foodie person and always keen to try new and different foods . I am active , love to run and travel (thanks covid) and I love to bbq ...

Alcohol I don't care about at all and I can deal with that easier but my overall quality of life is what is concerning me especially as I am , if I may say , a bit younger (sorry if that sounds selfish). The Internet survival rate for non pancreas patients studies are terrifying but that's the Internet and nobody will know unfortunately! I wish I didn't work so hard all my life to not get to a chance to enjoy retirement (sorry trying to humour to remove the pain)!

My wife thinks that the operation is the best solution Versus my suggestion of monitoring every 3 months and if anything changes to then have a removal . Doc said that if it turns then it will very hard to have any operation . One day they tell me that turning takes years but now they are saying it might be quick ! Confused !

I would love to hear from others about life after no pancreas and what are the things that I should be aware of.

Thank you for reading,

Mario

  • Hello Mariov

I'm really pleased to hear that you were told there are no signs of cancer following your recent investigations. I hope that that news gave you some reassurance about things.

It's understandable that you're concerned about the long term implications of the surgery and I'm unsure if we've anyone here on the forum who has had their pancreas removed but hopefully if there are any members here they will post to share their experiences with you.

I wonder if you might find it helpful to speak to one of our nurses in the meantime? They may be able to offer some support and advice. If you'd like to chat to them then they are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
