Worried

Hello

I feel really really silly posting here and know there are people going through much worse. Im just worried and cannot settle. Im 28 years old and 4 weeks ago I started with breast pain all around my left breast and my left nipple is really sore and has some discharge. I left it thinking period playing tricks on me but period came and went but the pain and discharge didn't.

I went to my GP and saw a nurse specialist she said I will refer you to the Breast Clinic, when she said this I felt anxious but thought dont worry because she said its being made as routine.

The next morning 10am I got a phone call from the urgent referral team and im being seen on Wednesday 28th.

My panic rose and I just started thinking why its nothing. I keep wanting to cancel my appointment I keep telling my fiance im taking a place someone else needs and im wasting their time but he is adamant I go.

I've banned myself from Google because it keeps coming up with worst case and I know in my gut im fine.

I have 3 children, one 7 year old and 7 month old twins. I asked could it be breast feeding but she didn't think so because I havent breast fed for 6 months.

I keep thinking is it because I haemorrhaged after my twins and its just sent my body a bit loopy.

Does anyone have any advice or a similar story to mine and came back and they were fine. I know im fine im just thinking breast clinic terrified again im sorry to post here im just taking a chance and curious if anyone could offer advice or have had similar problems.

Thanks

    Hi Nicola,

A very warm welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry to hear why you are here. Please don't feel silly posting here. This is just what we are here for. It is scary waiting to be seen at the breast clinic but please keep your appointment, as you need to get these changes checked out. Only one person in every eight referred will get a cancer diagnosis, so there is still a good chance that this could be due to something else.

Don't worry about the speed with which you have been allocated an appointment. The general rule of thumb is that we are all seen within a two-week time frame, so this is normal.

You are quite right to steer clear of Dr Google, as he would have you dead and buried with a sore finger. Besides, much of the information is out of date, poorly researched and aimed at the spectacular.

Try not to worry, as this won't alter the outcome. With three young children, it should be easy for you to keep yourself busy. This will help to make the time pass until you get your appointment.

Nobody can foretell the outcome of your visit. You will probably have a few tests done on the day. These will show what is happening. If anything shows up on the scans, you may have a biopsy. This tests your tissue for cancerous cells and is normal practice. You will then have a wait of 1-2 weeks to get the result of the biopsy.

I sincerely hope that all turns out well for you. Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

Thank you for replying to my post. I feel calmer about the situation reading your reply especially about the general rule being a 2 week wait that has reassured me a lot.

My mother in law had a similar scare and she said the waiting is one of the worst parts but the kids keep me busy so through the day I'm not thinking too much.

I will post the outcome of my visit which I'm keeping in my mind will be something so simple.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me you've helped me feel a bit calmer than I was i'm really grateful

  • Well I had my appointment today and I was a bit disappointed. I have been worrying sick for 2 weeks and I am no further forward. I went to my appointment and the specialist did the exact same examination as my nurse did at the GP. She doesn't know what it is so has said she wants an ultrasound done. However I was under the impression this was all done the same day but I have to wait 7-10 days just for the appointment letter and god knows how long for the scan. Its adding to my stress I cant concentrate properly and not sleeping the best. I am unnecessarily worrying and I felt let down by the specialist as she gave me no indication what it could be and I have to wait longer to find out what is going on.

Last time I went to the GP my nipple looked like it had a cut across and she said you don't have an inverted nipple. Now though when I went to the hospital the specialist said your nipple is inverted.

I want to know whats going on. Is it normal to wait for the scan I really thought everything was done the same day?

    Hi Nicola,

I'm sorry to hear that you were disappointed by today's visit. The specialist can only speculate on a diagnosis until she gets the results of a biopsy back. Most people do get their scan and any other preliminary tests that are needed on the first visit, but sometimes they are sent away to wait for another appointment.

I am sorry that this has happened to you and hope that all will still turn out well for you.

    Do please keep in touch.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
