LLetz procedure and results

Hi all,

This is my first time posting to any forums like this. I would love some advice from anyone with a similar experience.

I had a smear test in 2016 which came back showing abnormal cells, they were minor at this stage and I was told to come back after 6 months. Rather stupidly I didn't go back for a check up until 2020 ( I was only 22 in 2016 and didn't realise the importance of getting regularly checked).

In February 2020 my results again showed abnormal changes but they were minor still (I believe it was HPV). I was advised to come in for a colposcopy but due to coronavirus my appointment was postponed until October 2020. On arrival the doctor said she wasn't expecting there to be any more changes as they had remained the same from 2016 - 2020. This was not the case however and during the examination she told me she needed to do treatment (LLetz).

I asked if the changes has progressed significantly and she said 'yes, they needed to come out'. I am now waiting on results to see if she has got them all or if I need to go back in for treatment - I am concerned as to what the results may show, I'm assuming the cells were precancerous but is there still a possibility they could have been cancerous?

She didn't mention this and was quite vague, I wish I had done more research before going in so I could have asked questions.

Any advice would be so appreciated!

Just a side note - the treatment also tore and I had to be rushed back into hospital as I was bleeding and had clots, she then had to go over the area with diathermy to stop the bleeding I have been told this is rare!! As you can imagine I was very flustered and not quite within my right mind to be asking about the results etc.

  • Hi ameliar_ose,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand the waiting for further information must be a little unsettling, and it's also perfectly natural to think of questions after you've already seen the doctor.

Firstly it sounds as if you'll have an opportunity to ask any questions when you get your results, so do jot anything down and discuss it with them when you can.

You may find it helpful to speak to one of our nurses about this, as they may be able to advise on your questions in a general sense. If you'd like to speak to them then you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
