Awaiting biopsy results

Hi there everyone,

I was in at the clinic on Tuesday and ended up getting biopsy done.
when I spoke to the consultant he said that it looks to him like my lump could be a small cancerous tumour but that it also could just be a cyst. However he went on to tell me about how they would likely plan to treat me should it be cancer.

I suppose my question is - how likely is it not to be cancer so you think if he went into such depth to discuss it being cancer? Or am I just reading too much into it?
I had though that, if he really though it was just a cyst then he surely wouldn't have really said too much about cancer.

also - with your biopsy wound - do you leave the sterile strips on? The nurse said to take off the dressing after 2/3 days but she didn't say, and neither does the sheet she gave me, about the steri strips - I'm assuming I just leave them until they fall off?

not back to till Thursday evening for my results - not sure I can cope with the wait I'll be honest

thanks

  • Hi Jaclyn,

I was in exactly the same position about 2 years go, was referred for a scan as I had a lump and they decided to do biopsies there and then.

My doctor who did the biopsies was saying it's prob 50/50 cancer but the consultant I saw straight after said he thinks it's a non-cancerous lump, but as it is quite big about 3 cm it was a slight worry...

The wait is petrifying indeed and it is a challenging mental exercise to keep positive!

Thank heaven my results were fine, I still have a check every 2 years as if it grows it needs to be removed.

From my experience what helped while waiting for the results ( 3 weeks!!) was not to think too much about it... or limit the time and have a 'mental worry box' where you put worry till tomorrow and carry on with your normal life.

Also my holy grail was a quick 10 min utube meditation for anxiety ( to the point I was listening to it on repeat when we went for the results until the doctor called us in..). So try and find one you like and soothes and see if it helps.

The stitches are normally dissolvable or the will come off on their own, I was told to avoid showering and get the 'wounds' wet for about 3 days until they start healing.

Keep strong and please share your results
