Smear and coil and miscarriage complications

Hello!

Its a bit of a long one so grab a brew!

I have had the copper coil in for 2.5 years and it has been horrendous, the periods have been ridiculously heavy and painful to the point I have been crying and bent over my bed on all fours!

13 days ago, I had a miscarriage. Every single dr I spoken to didnt believe me because I haf the coil and was getting negative pregnancy tests, I was told to eat leafy greens and just get on with it. I know what come out of my body was not normal and pressed the issue further. I was finally allowed to send my Dr pictures of what I had passed and she was then 100% convinced it was a miscarriage butnis convinced with me having negative pregnancy tests, I miscarried a while ago and it has taken a while for my body to pass it.

I went to get examined to see what had gone on with my coil, turns out it wasn't where it should be and couldn't be relied on for contraception anymore. Fast forward a week(today!) I am back in my drs to get my coil out and a marina coil put in. Whilst I was there the dr said she would do my smear(first ever one) I was happy for this, just get it all done in 1 go!

The dr took out my coil-ouch!!! Then proceeded with the smear. It was so painful which i was not expecting! She stopped and asked me if I bleed during sex and panic just set in immediately. I thankfully do not have that issue. She then asked me about constipation and needing a wee. I said I often do get constipated and when I need a wee,as soon as I feel the sensation I have to urgently go if that makes sense? There is no sensation of needing a wee and being able to hold it-i have to go right away. Thendr then said she can see abnormalities with my cervix and she cannot put the coil in,she wants to rule out, infection, polyps and HPV. Apparently I don't have a pink fleshy cervix and as soon as she started the smear I bled heavily which wasn't normal? She said she would still measure my cervix for the coil to see hownit goes but it was agonising and she said there is something causing resistance and she can't push any further. She also referred me to a gynaecologist

Im worried sick!! I've already had an awful time dealing with a massively unexpected miscarriage and now this. Does anyone else have any similar experiences? I'm googling my life away and panicking because I've also seen that leg pain can be a symptom and I often get leg pain and make jokes with my boyfriend about growing pains because I'm already 5ft10.

Any help or advice would be amazing

Thanks!

  • Hello Steph

I'm so sorry to hear about the recent discovery that you had had a miscarriage. It's understandable from all that you've written about in your post that you're feeling anxious about things.

It's good to hear that your GP has referred you now to see a specialist. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for the appointment.

We know that lots of people use the internet to search for answers whilst waiting for an appointment but I'd strongly reccomend giving Dr Google a wide berth. You won't find answers to your particular circumstances but you will find lots of (often) inaccurate information which will cause you to feel more anxious about things.
You might find it helpful to talk through some of your concerns with one of our team of nurses. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 and I'm sure they will be able to offer some advice and support ahead of your appointment.

I hope that you have some news soon.

    Best wishes,
