Referred to breast service clinic

Hi all

I have been to the doctors today as I noticed a lump in my right breast a few weeks ago. I have quite lumpy breasts so initially didn't really think too much into it. I have since become more and more anxious about it and went to the doctors today.

The doctor felt it and said oh I know what it is. Its a fibroadeanoma or something? Then said I will refer you to the clinic. So I asked what that was and he said nothing sinister. I asked why he was sending me there and he said as a safety net. I got really upset in the doctors as I am naturally really anxious. He said I should get an appointment within two weeks.

I've came home and I'm absolutely beside myself. Im convinced im going to go and it will be cancer. Has anyone else had any similar experiences?

Thank you

  • Hi Stella,

Firstly welcome to our forum. Any thoughts or questions that you have will be answered by lovely people who have all been exactly where you are now.

Your GP has referred you for piece of mind. He's not mentioned cancer but is playing it safe as he should. All waiting times are different at the moment due to covid so don't worry if you're not contacted within the 2 weeks.

Your appointment will be explained step by step and the nurses and drs go out of their way to be sensitive and informative, explaining each step. You'll be asked questions and have a physical examination. Possibly a mammogram and biopsy. Slightly uncomfortable but ok.

Only about 10% of referrals have a cancer diagnosis so hopefully you'll be absolutely fine. The worst part is the waiting and scaring yourself silly looking on the internet so try as hard as you can to distract yourself.

I wish you well and if you want to know anything at all just post and someone will answer you.

    Take care. Stay strong.

    Barb xx

  • Hi

I am sorry I can't offer any further advise or experience, however I am waiting for my appointment to the breast clinic after a visit to my doctor last week. I have tried very hard to stop myself googling but just want to the appointment to happen ASAP.

I am 42, with pain in my right breast and under arm.
I hope it is some comfort knowing someone at the same stage.

  • Thank you.

I'm just so worried! I'm convinced it is something sinister as I can't see why else he would refer me but I do understand what you're saying. I find it difficult to think rationally when I'm like this.

I wonder if there are any occasions where they don't refer? And if it is quite routine to do so.

    Thanks again

  • no need to apologise. [@Tansey]‍  it is nice to speak to someone also in the same situation.

I am 31 and have a lump in my right breast. It is hard to describe it apart from it feels hard under the skin. It does seem to move but I cant tell if thats the skin moving over it. It seems quite deep.

I'm beside myself, can't eat today and the minute I put my phone down i just end up thinking and thinking. My poor partner is trying to help but there is nothing he can say. I need to try and pull myself round.

    Thanks

    Stella

  • Hi, Just wanted to join for a bit of moral support (to offer, and receive...). Yes, I think it's totally routine to get referred - I would take it as a sign that your GP is giving you good care by getting a second opinion from an expert. I was referred over 10 years ago and the specialist at the clinic just had a quic feel and confirmed what my GP had said. As the moderator says above, try not to worry...

But as you say, easier said than done. I was referred again (entire different, unrelated reason) two weeks ago, and am being seen tomorrow. Been managing reasonably well till today - been in meltdown most of today, beside myself with worry. So just wanted to give you a big hug. Be kind to yourself while you wait.

  • Ah @nmk thank you for the response.

Good luck with everything and same to you. Try not to worry too much! I hope everything goes well for you xx

  • Ladies your reaction is normal. We all go to that place where you're currently at and unfortunately until you're given an answer by the professionals you won't be able to put it out of your mind completely.

Referrals are given quite frequently because GPS, opticians, most medics now can so easily be sued so if there's a percentage of unknown then for a professional and patient it's best to have it checked out. So don't overthink the reasons behind. Wait to see the specialist and try not to drive yourselves crazy in the meantime. I believe women are warriors so whatever the outcome you'll fight if needed.

  • Hi there,

Just want you to know I'm in a similar boat, shoulder pain for weeks which I assumed was pulled muscle, very sore left breast for weeks also which feels lumpier than normal to me, gp confirmed it's very lumpy and referred me for mammogram which I had today, results in 7 to 10 days and tonight I'm terrified, really sore, convinced its late stage cancer spread to my shoulder and can't stop googling, hubby brushed it all off, dreading the sleepless nights and dark thoughts

Sending love to all in the same boat xx anyone any experience with the shoulder pain??

  • Sorry to hear about that and I wish you all the best! It is such a worrying time and like you I just go round and round in circles and it always ends up being the same outcome!

It has actually really supported me just speaking to you all so thank you.
