Long wait for ultrasound after breast clinic appointment

I was referred for an urgent 2 week appointment after finding a lump in my breast which I attended on Wednesday.
After the initial examination the doctor said the lump felt like a Fibroadenoma. I already have one in the same breast. She said she would refer me for an ultrasound and write to me with the results but due to a backlog this scan would be at some point in November. This seems like a long wait given I already waited 2 weeks for the first appointment and now it will be up to 2 months for a scan. She said this was due to my age (31) and that she's not concerned about the lump.

Is anyone else having to wait such a long time for a scan. I know I should take comfort that she said she's not concerned but my understanding is that they can't tell just from an examination.

I'm trying to keep calm about it all but keep panicking that by waiting such a long time it could be worse if it is cancer.

  • Hi Em0192,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand your concerns about this and I know it's never easy when there is uncertainty and a wait for further information. Waiting times have increased for a lot of people recently due to a backlog from recent months - although I know this doesn't make things any easier for you. The wait until November won't make a difference, and especially as it sounds like the doctor isn't concerned.

Fingers crossed you get an appointment as early as possible, but in the meantime try to keep busy and keep your mind off things.

If you'd like to get any further advice from one of our nurses, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,
