What to expect? Ovarian cancer referral

Hi all,

My mum is currently being fast tracked with suspected ovarian cancer but, due to the current Covid restrictions, we’re uncertain of next steps and would appreciate any advice or experience of similar situations.

Mum started with severe pain in her lower abdomen last weekend that she wondered if it was appendicitis or maybe IBS.

She saw the triage nurse (due to Covid) on Wednesday and they discovered a large mass in her uterus area. Three separate nurses examined her. She had the blood test but hasn’t had the results back yet.

She has been referred to the oncology team and had a call today to say her appointment will be next week via Zoom. How can such an appointment be carried out via Zoom? We would love to know what to expect.

To give further background:

- mum is 59 and post menopausal

- has been on HRT and most recently Vagifem

- has previous history of endometriosis and ovarian cysts

- has had no other symptoms of ovarian cancer and is otherwise fit and healthy

Any advice is greatly appreciated whilst we’re in this limbo mode of not knowing what this is or what happens next, especially in such uncertain times due to Covid!

Thank you

  • Hi

sorry I can't give you any information on what happens next etc but if it gives you any ease to chat to me I'm only a message away,

im in the same situation as you, my mam is also currently waiting to be seen at hospital by the gynaecologist oncologist, thankfully this is at hospital so I'd maybe question the zoom option for your mam?

She is 57 and since I'd say April time she has been suffering on and off with lower tummy ache, no other symptoms at all but due to Covid she was unable to get in for a scan until last week when they found a 9cm cyst or some formation coming from what they could tell her ovary, it has blood flow and is solid or has solid components but they couldn't be sure. She also had a CA125 test done in may which had levels of 16 (normal range) but they are being repeated at her appointment next week. Also like your mam mine to had endometriosis after having me at a young age and has also gone through the menopause around 4 years ago now.

it is a massively worrying time and I know your mind goes into overdrive and you turn to google for answers so I'm completely understanding of what you and your mam are going through. Please keep me updated and I wish your mam all the best. X
