Day one - found lump, referred to breast clinic

This morning has been a roller coaster. Couple of days ago I found a lump.... was it real  ? Maybe not...maybe it wont be there tomorrow ( monday) crack on..keep your mind occupied..dont think about it. Monday...still there.... and now looking in the mirror theres a crease in the skin...ish... This isnt going to go away is it...  Tuesday...... right Stop being a coward..it might not be the big C.... but do you honestly think a) it's going to go away on it's own? b) you can carry on knowing it's there? ...

Wednesday: 9am emailed the surgery on their askmygp app.

Typed in " I've found a lump in my breast " ..cue tears...

Couple of hours pass while I try and concentrate on nothing much.

Call from clinician at the surgery..lots of questions about where it is, how big it is, does it move, is it attached, any redness, any discharge.

Referred to breast clinic. Usually two weeks but because of COVID...they are a bit behind ..could be 3 weeks.... . Be prepared they will probably do an ultra sound scan and a biopsy there and then.

Im not concerned about what they do ...liar... but the

.sooner the better. I just need to know what this is!! And hope it isnt what I think it is. No family history of BC..... everything crossed.

  • Hi,

I was in your shoes 2 weeks ago! When I went to clinic (last Wednesday) I had mammogram and ultrasound. Radiographer was not worried about the lump/ swelling that has sent me there but said he felt something else. So he decided to do a biopsy there and then. It was nowhere near as bad as I would have expected. Practically painless. He put in a tiny marker for future ref, took another mammogram to be certain it was in the right place and that was it. A bit sore and bruised after but totally manageable.

I got a call today from consultant to say it was benign and doesn't need any follow up. So there are positive stories- try not to worry too much! Fingers crossed for you. Waiting is hard. I have an MRI on 21st Oct on pancreas so scared stiff about that!- Another waiting game :(

I hope all works out well for you. Take care. x

  • Hi

Thank you for replying. You feel so alone. Only hubby and my sister know..had to tell someone. Trying not to think of how to tell the kids if it IS BC. You can see I'm galloping down the road of scenarios. Which is worse making mental lists just incase? Or not in the hope you wont have to? Moved things around in 2 bedrooms yesterday just to keep me busy. If it's a 3 week wait this will be the tidiest house in the countyFell apart half way through tea...no apparent reason..wasnt thinking about it at the time.

Lost my dad in July...this really easnt needed on top of all that.

    Hi Whatnext,

Waiting times vary throughout the country, particularly with the current Coronavirus pandemic. I agree that every cancer is specific to the individual, but many like to know the statistics and some can gather some solace in knowing that the chances of being diagnosed with cancer are only 1 in 8.

It is better to have accurate statistics than consulting Dr Google, where information is often out of date, poorly researched and aimed at the spectacular.

Ten and eleven years ago I was fortunate enough to get my results in under a week, but that was before Covid 19 appeared. If you read some of the posts on this forum, you will find that some people are currently waiting 4 weeks for test results.

I hope that your results tomorrow don't show up anything untoward.

Do please keep in touch. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

This particular thread isnt here to give out accurate information as none of us are medically qualified.

This thread is supporting those who have joined it. Without giving anyone false hope.

And if youd read it. You would have seen that tomorrow, in my case,  is a formality before treatment starts. My first appt was last Wednesday. So results in less than a week. COVID hasnt affected the breast clinic here.  The team have carried on working right through.

  • Hi Whatnext,

My apologies. I had read all of your posts, but I misread your one with the results and thought that you had further tests. You are indeed fortunate that Covid has not affected your breast clinic. I only wish that the same could be said for all others!

I hope that you manage to finalise your treatment regime tomorrow. It's always good to get started.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx

  • Good luck whatsnext for today! Thinking of you. Anyone else having tests, appointments also think of you too

  • Hi Whatnext64, good luck, I hope everything turns out well for you X

Hi Abundantcuriosity, yes, see your GP anyway.
I had a GP appointment for a new lump, pains between the arm pit and left breast, and pains in the right breast. I have had to wait 5 weeks for the hospital appointment, and two prior to that waiting for a letter for the appointment. Even if your lump is harmless or benign, or from an injury, you may have to wait for referral, and hopefully not as long as I have had to wait. Hopefully your doctor can say it doesn't need referring at all.

I have had a benign lump in my left breast since I was in my early 20's. I had a new benign lump in my right breast four years ago, that one has since grown, no pain but there is a mass, and I have 'mass' areas above my breasts below the collar bone. Non of this is to do with the menopause or periods because i'm 60. I've been in tears from internet searching, because a lot of what I read when I put in symptoms assumes you're still having periods. I'm glad to have found this forum, it makes me feel less alone, even though all our issues are different.

There are lots of benign breast conditions, and it's always worth checking.

    Good luck everyone XXX

  • Hi Traciej

We are all systems go!! Surgery to remove the nasty little *** by lumpectomy Nov 9th.

Feel sooooo much better now knowing how what why and when.

Will be bricking it on the day though.

Multitude of possible treatments depending on post op test results. ie: lymph  nodes are taken during surgery then sent off for tests.

  • That's great news whatsnext!! You now have a plan, glad you feel so much better! And so relieved I'm sure!

  • So glad you are getting your op so quickly and covid has not affected your treatment. You sound so much more positive now and I hope everything goes well and your recovery goes well. As you said they obviously knew what they saw but couldn't confirm it without a biopsy. I'm so sorry you are going through this but stay strong they aren't messing about and they will get you the best treatment for you xx

    Hi Whatnext,

I am glad that you feel better now knowing what is going to be done. You will obviously have to wait until your post-op pathology results come back before treatment is decided upon. However, it is always good to get started and I'm glad to see that you don't have too long to wait.

I was bricking it when I had my lumpectomy and my bilateral mastectomy, but I found it a lot easier to get through than I expected - I'm sure that you will too.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx
