Melanoma urgent referral

Hi to you all

i am in a state of panic. Yesterday my doctor was very concerned about a growth on my thigh and has referred me to dermatology but he does strongly suspect melanoma.
the more I read the more I'm convinced I have and it's bad .

ive had this Thing on my leg for years (approx 7) when I first noticed it I got it checked out privately at a mole clinic and they took photos and I got the all clear . Over the years it would fade away and then return over a month or two at a time and then fade away completely again. I have since had two children and I can't remember seeing it for that time . Then around lockdown I noticed it came back but didn't fade and and has since got very dark and pronounced .
im filled with dread and fear that I it's all my fault and I haven't had it seen to sooner. I just want to know and as such am thinking of going private.

I really hope someone can help or just offer some reassurance . I haven't slept and I feel sick . Oh and to add I have been experiencing headaches for around 4 weeks now (don't know if related )

thank you for reading. X x

  • Hi Lou,

I'm sorry you are going through this worrying time and I hope I can help calm your worries a little.

It's good that your GP has referred you because the dermatologist is the expert, no matter what the GP thinks. 75% of people referred are given a clean bill of health, either after examination at the referral appointment or after an excision biopsy. Of the 25% that don't, some will be diagnosed with a dysplastic (atypical) mole. These are benign moles that look dodgy but if left in situ they can turn cancerous so they need removing. So, as you can see, an urgent referral doesn't always mean it turns out to be cancer.

Don't beat yourself up about not noticing it before - with a young family to deal with and the fact it's faded and returned would make it difficult to keep track of. The good thing is that you had it checked out once before and it was fine then. Pregnancy and the hormonal changes can cause new moles or changes to existing ones so it might be that your mole is now dysplastic.

Whatever the outcome, treatment is much better these days so don't think it's a fine deal. Also, going private at the moment may not be as speedy at the moment. During Covid they haven't been operating as the NHS have been using their facilities and they still aren't back up to full operation but certainly make enquiries if you feel it will help.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Angie

thank you so much for replying to my post. I feel a bit lost at the moment so it's helped hearing from you .
i have just been given an appointment with the nhs on Monday so I think that's pretty good.
move also managed to find my original report I had done as a bit of history to take with me.

ive also been wondering if it could be something hormonal as 3 months ago I started taking a progesterone only contraceptive pill and I think that's when about it started to look worse . I'm just clinging on to anything at the moment !

I hope you are ok and thank you again
