Delay in being seen by consultant due to COVID 19

Hi my daughter has presented to her go with bleeding (heavy) when she goes to the toilet, she had her bloods done which came back that she was slightly anaemic, the GP has referred her to see a consultant but we have been told it could be as much as a 14 week wait for a telephone consultation due the virus.  We are worried sick about her, she has convinced herself it's bowel cancer having read a recent story of a young girl her age who initially presented with similar symptoms, how can I get her seen more urgently?

  • Hi cross26,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can certainly understand your worries and I know things are really difficult at the moment in terms of waiting times.

If the GP was particularly concerned it's likely they'd have put a more urgent referral in, however if the problem continues over the coming days and weeks and you remain worried, you could always call your GP to see if there's anything they can do to hurry it along.

If you'd like to talk anything through with our nurses about this, or any potential options, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Try to avoid looking things up online about this as it often tends to increase worry and may not be especially helpful or relevant.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
