Raised CA125

Hi all,

After some advise and wondered if anyone was in a similar position.

Went to GP as had bloating, pain just before period, lower back pain. I had lots of bloods done, kidney, liver, thyroid, diabetes, cholesterol, CA125 etc all of which came back as satisfactory apart from CA125 which was raised at 39! Was referred for a ultra and transvaginal scan which both came back clear nothing detected. Ask GP what could of caused the rise in CA125 with no real answer and was advised to have my bloods re done. I've just had the results back and it's now CA125 61!! I'm worried why it's raised and also why it's become higher in the space of a month after having a clear ultra scan. My gynaecologist is sending me for a CT scan. I'm absolutely terrified something will show up with how quick the CA125 levels have raised. I'm a worrier at the best of times but this is sending my mind racing. I'm 37 not menopausal with 2 small children. I have back pain and admominal pain which I put down to being overweight but maybe not now..... any one had similar, clear scans but something picked up on a CT scan???

  • Hi Bien1310,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this must be unsettling and I hope you're getting on OK.

The CA125 test is not completely reliable so it's good that you've been referred for an additional test as hopefully this will provide all the information you need. You can find out more about CA125 and screening here.

The best thing is to try to sit tight until the next test and the results. Try to keep busy if you can, to help keep your mind off things while you wait.

Meanwhile, if anyone here has any similar experience to share then hopefully they'll be along soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • My situation is slightly different in that my CA125 was slightly raised at 41 when taken - but this was after I had had ultrasounds that showed a large mass. I am also pre-menopausal. I have done lots of research into this - and also spoken to my GP. She said that CA125 levels are unreliable in women who have not been through the menopause and that your levels can fluctuate throughout the month/your cycle. Do you have a date for your CT? I have also had an MRI and CT scan.
I hope you're ok - I know how much worry these things cause.

  • Thank you for reading and posting

ive got my CT scan booked in for tomorrow so feeling ever so nervous and anxious about it

Did anything come from your CT and MRI?

    hope your ok

  • The ct scan showed that there is nothing anywhere else but it’s not clear enough for the consultant to be able to confirm that the cyst is non cancerous. Still does show signs of being at least partially dermoid. Surgery booked for 13th October and they will biopsy then which will take another 2 weeks for results.  She said they will try to do it as keyhole but that may change once they look inside properly and they could then open part of my old scar! Recovery time is 6 weeks. Will be in for 1-2 nights. Glad to finally have some answers and a date for the surgery. Am now isolating at home! At least I now know that in 4 weeks I will definitely know if it is cancer or not and Donald will be history!  I asked about having the whole lot out and just never having to go through this again but they said as I’m 5 years away from menopause it would be better to not go into a forced menopause.
Do you know if you're having the contrast dye for your CT? The actual scan took less than 5 minutes. Look at it as a step towards knowing what you're dealing with x

  • Yes, have been told I'm having the contrast dye. Not really sure what to expect from that??

Aww glad you have a date for surgery (13th is my birthday ) and great news that it's not showing anywhere else and clear that's a massive positive

I've often think that, I'm 38 soon not planning any more

children and have had nothing but trouble with my ladies bits (had abnormal cells from a smear not so long ago that were removed) and think would it be easier to just remove the lot. Although I know it's not that simple and complications and force menopause can arise. It just feels like one thing after another with it and just fed up with all the worry all the time

  • They put the dye in through a cannula in your arm - gives you a very odd sensation that you're wetting yourself but you're not! Didn't hurt at all. Do you have an appointment for after to get the results? The waiting I find is the worst thing: I'd rather just know what was going on so I can deal with it. I've been guided by the experts as to what should be taken and left behind! Even though, like you, I don't need any of it anymore!
Good luck for tomorrow - let me know how it goes x

  • Hi everyone,

Thought I would update my post in case anyone else has a similar situation

Had CT scan on pelvic, tummy and chest, results came back as all clear!!

However, the mystery of why the CA125 was slightly raised and then rose again is still unexplained. My gynaecologist has suggested it could be raised due to endometriosis (which wouldn't be picked up on a CT scan) the plan now is for me to go on the mini pill as the gynaecologist thinks it might help and then have bloods re tested in 3 months time

Feeling very thankful that all scans have come back clear and happy I'm under review and will be tested again in a few months time

Wishing all the best and luck to everyone on their own journey and hope everyone is well
