Ascites - unexplained abdominal swelling and pain episodes

Hi there.

I'm worried about my mum and wondered if anyone here has experienced anything similar and might be able to offer some suggestions on further follow up my mum should ask for.

For about 18 months she was having intermittent severe upper abdominal pain for 4 hours at a time which was relieved when she was sick. Over the last 3 weeks it's more more severe happening more frequently at days at a time. She's lost 1 stone since January and has nearly completely lost her appitite.

Recently she had a really bad episode and noticed a 12cm x 6cm swelling on her upper right abdomen that protrudes about 1cm.

She's had full bloods done and waiting for the results . Yesterday the doctor did an urgent referal for an ultrasound scan which she had today. The sonographer said they couldn't see anything on her pancreas and the swelling didn't show up on the ultrasound so doesn't think it's a hernia but could he fluid. They said she needs a ct scan so has done a referal.

I'm finding it very strange how the ultrasound hasn't shown up anything but she's in such severe pain. Has anyone else had any similar experiences?

Thanks for reading this.

  • Hello PKW952,

I hope your mum won't have to wait long for her CT scan. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting to find out more especially as the ultrasound hasn't shown anything.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. It won't be long now until you get some definite answers.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine for your mum.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi

Thank you for your reply. I really appreciate it. We've had a further development that her blood tests came back to show she has polycythemia and is now waiting for a referal to the haemotologist. Also there was a misunderstanding and she hasn't been referred to a ct scan but a deeper ultrasound scan.

Hopefully it all gets sorted soon!

    Thanks
