Breast calcification

I had a mammogram last week and ultrasound - I've had a few infected cysts so used to the screening process. However, this time they picked up micro calcifications in my left breast. The consultant made an appointment for me to go in for biopsy next week. I'm obviously a little anxious and this is made worse as the consultant didn't at any time mention that the calcifications may be benign, just told me that they would have a meeting at the hospital to decide what treatment I would need once they got the results which wasn't terribly reassuring!

Has anyone had a similar experience? Are they just painting a bad picture so I'm prepared for the worst? The consultant made a point of asking if I had someone at home....

im also concerned that I won't be able to take someone with me should it be bad news and the need for a discussion around treatment arises.

Hoping to find people with similar experiences!

thanks

  • Hi Lorraine

Thanks - it's good to know that there is someone to talk to here!

  • Hi

so - Had my biopsy yesterday, wasnt too bad but sore today.  I was told not to do anything strenuous for a couple of days, went for a walk today (as I thought it wouldnt be considered strenuous) and now feel totally wiped out!

Anyway, they gave me an appointment for next Thursday to get my results.  Little nervous about it, but I'm just keeping in mind that if is bad news it'll be either DCIS or very early stage so I'm confident I can deal with whatever they say.  I'm just concerned that at no point have they said its not likely to be cancer, I would have thought they would offer some reassurance, but hey ho!

I'll keep you posted in here.  thanks x

  • So just a quick update - consultant seems pretty sure it's DCIS and surgery is on the horizon. Have to go for a specialist biopsy on the 21st (apparently to decide how much breast tissue will need to be removed) then back to the consultant on the 5th November.

They were honest and explained everything thoroughly. Had a few tears when I told my parents, but feeling pretty positive about it all. My boss was amazing when I told him (his wife had breast cancer 2 years ago).

To think this all started with an infected cyst! Whilst it was the news I wanted to hear, I'm thankful for that troublesome cyst as it allowed this to be picked up in good time.

So, I'm guessing the next few months may be a little bit rough, but glad that it's not much worse.
