Father referred to MRI & CT scan after colonoscopy?

Hello,

First, my parents have always been very secretive around their physical health. When I was at University, my mother had breast cancer and radiotherapy, which I was not aware of until 4 years after diagnosis.

Most recently, my father had persistent blood in his stool, with him going for a colonoscopy last week. When I enquired about how this went, my father stated that the colonoscopy revealed rectal bleeding, hemorrhoids and some scarring. Moreover, he stated that the doctor took a biopsy from the site of bleeding. Subsequently, because he has been referred for MRI & CT scans this week, I believe that there is something very sinister going on (I also overheard him stating the word 'tumor' when speaking to his brother).

Ultimately, I believe my parents have minimised what is going on, but are MRI & CT scans after colonoscopy only initiated when there is a substantial likelihood of cancer?

Thanks for any responses.

  • Hello mich77,

I am sorry to hear about your dad's persistent issues. It's good he had this colonoscopy and I hope you will soon get a clearer picture of what is going on. Having an MRI and CT scan after his colonoscopy means that they have decided to investigate things a little further but you won't know what the diagnosis is until you get all the results from these various tests. Our nurses would be able to explain the process to you in detail so don't hesitate to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.  While you are waiting, try and keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid consulting Dr Google as this will inevitably bring up all the worst case scenarios and make you worry more. It won't be long now until you find out more and we are keeping everything crossed for good results.

Do come back and keep us updated if you can on how things go for your dad.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lucie,

Unfortunately, my father was diagnosed with rectal cancer today (I am not sure what stage, I believe it was a lot for him to take in at the consultation - how could I find out the stage? As his son, could I contact his team for clarity on the severity?).

He will be having an abdominoperineal resection and chemoradiation. Hopefully, there will be no recurrence after the end of the treatment pathway.

    Devastating news.

  • Hi mich77,

I'm very sorry to hear this - I hope you're OK although I can imagine this must be a shock.

I would suggest giving them a call to try to find out more. As Lucie mentioned, if you have any questions or would like advice, do also feel free to give our nurses a call.

I hope you're able to find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • thank you - my parents have just stated that they don't want me getting involved by asking my father's team questions. I will respect their wishes, although not knowing the specifics is making me feel worse.
