Cervical Biopsy - Panicking

Hiya

I've recently just joined and thought instead of keeping it all in i decided to join the forum that will most likely help. I had a biopsy done today after my smear test came back with abnormal cells a few weeks back and I've been pretty much fine but now keep breaking down thinking the worst will happen.

I'm trying to keep a positive mind set but kind of feel I'm stopping myself from being honest with my feelings by showing a brave face when deep down I'm worried and scared but also don't want to worry people like my mum.

The hospital explained it can take up to 6 weeks for the results to come back which just seems so long, how do others cope during this time, living alone really doesn't help at times like this either.

Thanks for taking the time to read

  • Hi Danielle,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I hope you have found it helpful to write things down - do feel free to use this forum at any point to speak to others, it's a very welcoming and understanding community of people. If you don't get further replies you can always browse or search the forum for other relevant discussions.

There's nothing wrong with a positive mindset but being honest with yourself is important too, as you say - and it's natural to feel a little worried in situations like this.

Six weeks sounds a long time but hopefully you'll get the results sooner than this. Some people say it helps to keep busy and distracted while waiting for results, to help keep your mind off things.

I hope you find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • I understand the feeling. I had my smear at the beginning of the month. Hadn't had my results back but got a call from the hospital yesterday asking if I was available for an appointment later today for my biopsy (that was the first I new about anything not been normal) due to being on my period was told there would be no point to the appointment at the moment as they wouldn't get the results they needed.

Smear results arrived this morning to say I've got HPV and borderline changes to cells and that I will receive an appointment for a colposcopy. I'm doing the dazing off and breaking down thinking the worst about a) where HPV has come from and b) why they wanted me into the hospital so quickly when all I've heard about is that due to covid everyone is waiting longer than normal.

Don't quite know what to think. Can't get through to doctors to find out anything more.

    Scared

  • My mum was referred for a biopsy and she was told around 3 weeks for results (she is 65). However, she suddenly got a call 4 days later with confirmed cancer. She was then told she needed an MRI which was a few more weeks waiting. She got a letter today with a weeks notice. Then she got a call to come in today. We are all panicking why this is so quick. I was panicking before about waiting. I honestly think that waiting times are all over the place. What I've read online suggests all hospitals are very different. My mum is in right now. No idea when she will get the final verdic :(

I hope you get some answers soon.
