Thyroid cancer?

Hi

I'm hoping that someone can help me please.

I have had a CT-PET scan that showed a thyroid avid nodule. I subsequently had an ultrasound fine needle biopsy on the thyroid nodule last week. My results were sent to my rheumatoid arthritis consultant as that's who ordered the CT-PET scan and then the follow up FNA. (I was on biological injections for ankylosing spondylitis but these have been paused due to swollen lymph nodes and all my bloods being normal).

My rheumatoid consultant was quite blunt when she phoned me with results and said that the results are inconclusive and I am to expect the worst and she is referring me onto an Endocrinologist.

I can see the FNA results but they may as well be in gibberish as I don't understand them, they are:

1.2 cm isoechoic, spongiform nodule within the right thyroid lobe, containing tiny cystic foci and small echogenic foci that demonstrate comet-tail artefact, compatible with a benign (U2) nodule.

I'm obviously worried.

Thanks

  • Hello Queenie10,

Welcome to our forum. Unfortunately no one on the forum will be able to help you decypher these FNA results as these will best be interpreted by a medical expert. I hope you won't have to wait long to be seen by the endocrinologist and find out more about what all this means. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting to find out more.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

Yes, you are correct, the waiting is the hardest part.
