Worried about lump under jaw

Hi,

I got to see my ENT 2 weeks ago, she told me I had lost 6kg, she felt a lump under my right jaw, got my blood test there and I've received a letter for a neck ultra-sound next week which I think was quite fast. I didn't go there thinking about cancer at all.

I am really frustrated and worried because she didn't mention what she was suspecting. I am scared she might be thinking it's lymphoma but would have preferred she just told me that.

The swelling is in the location of my submandibular gland which is the one thing making me think it might not be my lymph node swollen but my salivary gland.

The lump has been there for 4 months and has been increasing in size, daily low grade fever I have worsening fatigue and periods of quite intense itchiness.

I would appreciate any feedback or advice. Thank's in advance

  • Hi John2424, no help here but recently (3Weeks ago) noticed 2 lumps, not painful, under my jaw and right side of my neck  - sub mental and superficial cervical . Bloods came back clear. I'm having an ultrasound on Monday morning.

also very tired, itchy and worried

  • Hi BC28, quite a similar situation, and timing with our UltraSound's. Did they mention what they think it could be? Thanks for sharing please keep in touch.

  • I've lost no weight at all. I eat very healthy and body build so the scales are part of a weekly routine for me. I didn't link the itching at first. I have scratched certain parts of my body raw, particularly my stomach although this came after my Drs appointment and it started after wearing new shorts so I thought it was a reaction to the material. Has since progressed to my arms and legs though.

The GP said she "didn't know what it could possibly be" so ordered urgent ultrasound and biopsy (if needed)

I do have 2 children, I'm a single parent and I work full time so put the tiredness down to that. However, I fall asleep at 9/9:30 pm now and can barely wake up for work. I've always been awake late, up and ready for the day!

the lumps have doubled in size over the past 3 weeks.

    whag did your ENT say?

  • I guess there could be a lot of other reasons for your tiredness but I'm sure you know your body best.

My ENT didn't say anything but not in a reassuring type of way. My lump has also increased in size recently. Hopefully, the Ultrasound will answer some questions.

  • Of course, and we always play it off as "oh, I've been tired because of the kids" etc.
You're right about knowing your own body though. I only checked my glands in my neck as I felt run down whilst at work... this is when I noticed the lumps. Maybe we know our bodies too well, which is always a good thing.

My GP was the same, she just said she didn't know and she would make an urgent referral.

When is your ultrasound? And what area are you in if you don't mind me asking?

  • Monday morning as well, up in Scotland.

  • Mines 10:10. I'm in Stratford Upon Avon.

keep in touch. Let me know how you get on please?

one lady on here said they did her biopsy straight after the scan so maybe prep for that, just incase.

  • How did it go today, mate? I read my appointment letter wrong. My appointment is actually tomorrow.

  • Hi John,

oh no! That must be frustrating.

it went well, the sonographer was really nice. He explained how Lymph Nodes work (which I didn't know too much about) .. he said they're larger than they should be but still too small to perform a biopsy, which is a good sign. Also, the 2 I felt are the only 2 that are enlarged. I have to keep an eye on them to see if they get bigger or have another scan in 2 weeks - whichever comes first.

He advised to be vigilant about covid even more so, as Lymph nodes swell when they draw infection in from the body to fight it, which means your immune system is lower.

Overall, still no answers and have to wait for them to grow or the next scan.

please keep me posted tomorrow. Thanks for checking in

  • Glad to you hear you are okay. Good to know you can always go back if they get bigger. My sonograpgher was nice as well.

She showed me my right salivary gland was bigger than my left one which I knew already from looking in the mirror but said my lymph nodes were okay which I think is good.

She said someone will be in touch with me soon so more waiting for me. Take care bud.
