Breast clinic - fine needle aspiration (breastfeeding)

Hi all,

not sure of the point to this post, just need to vent and hopefully share experiences with people in a similar situation.

I am 25 and have two children (just turned 2 and 6 weeks). I breastfed my first for 7 months and am currently breastfeeding my little one.

2 weeks ago I felt a pea sized hard lump in my left breast. It doesn't move and it is not painful. It hasn't changed over the two weeks. It's not affecting me feeding from that breast, I feed from both normally.

I saw my GP first two weeks ago who referred me to the breast clinic. I had that appointment this morning.

First I was seen and examined by the surgical consultant. She wasn't at all concerned due to my age and lack of family history of breast cancer. She said it was likely related to lactating.

I then had an ultrasound scan. The radiographer seemed a lot more concerned. She spent a very long time scanning the area where the lump is. She said she had found something solid within the lump and wanted to do a biopsy. The nurse had everything set up to do the core biopsy but then the radiographer went to discuss with the consultant who told her not to bother and just to do a FNA instead due to an apparent risk of causing a fistula because I'm breastfeeding if they did a core biopsy.

To be honest I would have rather have just done the biopsy today as they said if anything comes up in the FNA then they'll have to do a biopsy anyway and it just would have added unnecessary waiting time.

I asked again at the end of the scan what she had found and she said there is definitely something inside the lump that is solid and that is what she took cells from to test. She said that I would have an appointment next Tuesday to go back and discuss the results of the FNA and would have the core biopsy then if needed.

I saw the consultant again after and she was still very relaxed. Her words were that she was 'not suspicious' but all this seemed to be based on the fact I'm young rather than my actual scan etc. She said the lump was 'cystic but with some solid component'. She said the solid bit could be hardened milk or something. She said I would have a phone appointment next Thursday to get results, not come back in on Tuesday as the radiographer had suggested.

Basically, even though the consultant was really positive I don't feel that reassured as I feel her opinion was based on statistics rather than me as a patient. Where as the radiographer was the one actually seeing what is in there and her reaction was more concerned.

sorry for the ridiculously long post! Is anyone else waiting for FNA/biopsy results? Thanks!

  • I'm sorry you didn't feel much reassurance after speaking with the consultant but fingers crossed they are correct and the results will bring good news next week.

The waiting is always tough but I hope it helped to write everything down and I'm sure some of our members who have been in this situation will offer their support and advice to you soon.

    Kind regards,
