acoustic neuroma

Hi

I had breast cancer with lymph node involvement. Recently a neurologist has suggested that I could have either acoustic neuroma or a structural lesion of the brain but doesn't think it's connected with my breast cancer. I'm still undiagnosed as I've got to wait 18 weeks for a neurologist to see me but feel the breast care team should be looking after me instead. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Thanks

Lou

  • Hi Lou,

I'm sure the uncertainty and waiting for information must be difficult. I would suggest discussing any concerns you have about this with your breast care team - I know you've been told it's not connected, but perhaps they can help to explain why this is the case, or answer any questions you have about this.

I hope you're able to find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi,

My only experience of an acoustic neuroma is that my dad suffered one when he was 51. They are a benign tumour & it was on the nerve leading from the ear to the brain. It was the size of a pea when it was found - he was being investigated for hearing loss in that ear. It was removed successfully but he did suffer bad nerve pain & he still does, 34 years later! Because of the bad nerve pain he told his consultant that he'd wished he'd never had it done. The consultant neurologist (who was brilliant) was sympathetic but explained that, if it had been left, it would have grown so large it would have caused problems with his brain ie. loss of hearing, smell, feeling on that side of his head/face.

Because my dad has never suffered from cancer, and because the tumour was benign, we knew his acoustic neuroma wasn't cancer related. That is probably the same in your case but I'm not an expert. Perhaps you could speak to your nurse who may be able to help in some way. Good luck,
