Told I have breast cancer without biopsy results

Morning,

I went to the breast clinic yesterday after finding a dent in my left breast. I could feel a lumpish bit too away from the dent. I was examined and sent for ultrasound. As soon as the very lovely male radiologist put the probe on my breast he said, no we need mammograms first. So after 6 mammograms of both breasts I return to have my ultrasound. The male radiologist was with another female radiologist too this time, and said he has found a lesion and needs to biopsy it so they can see what treatment will best cure it. I then asked the dreaded question, is it cancer? To which he nodded. When I asked if he was sure he took my hand and tilted his head then went on to say how the surgeons were amazing and everything would be OK. After 2 more mammograms on my left breast, I then saw the breast surgeon who said the radiologist had graded my lump as 5, meaning cancer. I have biopsy results next Wednesday.

Could they be wrong? Could it still be benign? I lost my dear Mum to pancreatic cancer in January this year, so to put my poor family through this again after a roller-coaster year is terrifying. I am 36 with 2 boys and a stepson, and I feel responsible for looking after my family after the loss of my Mum, I'm worried who will look after them all if I have to have treatment etc.

Sorry for waffling on!

Rachael

  • Thanks Moon Puddle ️

My partner said he remembers my surgeon saying it was fast growing but they'd caught it early. That's probably why it's grade 3. They haven't mentioned what stage I am yet.

Surgery is within the next 4 weeks, and now deciding whether to tell my boys or leave it for now.

Anyway, Im hoping I'll be able to sleep tonight now I've had my diagnosis. I ate a proper meal tonight for the first time in 6 days too!

Feeling positive and ready for the next stage.

    Hi Rachel,

it's terrible news I too was diagnosed on my 1st visit in July but had to get official info on 2nd visit after the biopsies. Then the surgeon give you the plan whether as lumpectomy or whatever perhaps with Radiotherapy & drugs for several years. 3 weeks later I had a lumpectomy & sentinel lymph nodes removed 2.5 weeks later they said it had spread so needed to remove sll lymph nodes on right arm and will check them out, I am hearing next week for the results of that. Possible I will gave chemo etc.

i hsve 2 children under 10 and I know exactly how you feel it does feel that they are talking about someone else even when I mentioned it to my husband & work it still has not sunk in. But the waiting is the worst, once you get on the treatment treadmill it wires really well a bit slower with covid but so far sll staff have been fantastic.

I am so sad to hear about your diagnosis I am a few weeks ahead of you please msg me if you want to just shout cry or anything

extra hugs thinking if you xxxxxx

Thank you for your reply Ncd, I'm so sorry to hear you're battling this too and that your cancer has spread

The surgeon said the same plan as you have had, lumpectomy and sentinel nodes removed and testing.

My boys are 8 and 10 and I also have a stepson who is 9.theyre wonderful boys and are still grieving the loss of my Mum, their Nanny, in January. My Mum had pancreatic cancer and bravely battled it for 2 years before we lost her. I just don't want the boys to think the same is going to happen to me, because it's completely different and I'm going to be fine, just a small blip!

  • Hi May,

jusr going back to what you said earlier the grading is so they know at what rate the cancer cells split.  Whether it's slower, the same or a little quicker than our normal cells.  I hate the term fast growing or agressive.

you tell your kids when you feel ready. You will be surprised how good they deal with it.  Wording is important too. I told mine I had a lump and needed it removing and that I will be having treatment that will make me a bit poorly but will make sure I have no more lumps. No need to worry I'll be all better by Christmas. My older kids it was different because I'm BRAC2 so they needed to know so they can get tested. you know your kids so trust yourself.  You'll be great.

we all find our way to battle this desease with our good days and bad.
Good luck my lovely and I'll keep checking on here to see how you go.

    love a fellow warrior

  • Hi ncd, I think I am where you were in July 2020, so I am really hoping that this note finds you well!

My daughter is also under 10. I don't know what I'm going to tell her.

Went to the breast clinic for a sudden lump that everyone, including the first Dr I saw at the breast clinic thought was a cyst. Mammogram, sonogram, needle aspiration, (no fluid), biopsies with markers implanted and another Mammogram...by the end of the day the Dr was confident that the radiologist identified cancer.

Biopsy results won't be back for two weeks but I already have a date for a treatment plan that day. All panic over here.

I'm getting my head around the fact that it is cancer but I guess I'm  wondering if my diagnosis will be worse if they were so confident before the biopsy. I'm trying to controll my panic to get through the next two weeks.

Longing to hear from someone who can help me know what to expect.

Sending xx, hugs and lots of hope to you

  • Hi Racheal

I had a breast examination today at my doctors surgery because I have a dent in the left side of my breast and it looks like the skin is swollen above it even though no lumps were felt. I have been referred to the breast hospital within two weeks and now I'm worried out of my mind. I've just turned 40 years old. They said they don't suspect it's cancer but referring me anyway so I don't know what to think now.

  • Hi Amya,

Well done for going to the doctors and getting your symptoms checked out. I can't say don't worry because it's natural to do so, but take comfort in that IF it is cancer  things happen very quickly and from my experience I was treated very well.

Please keep us updated and let us know how you get on.

    Take care, Rachael x

  • Hi Racheal

Thank you for your reply. I know it took a lot of will power to go to my GP. I'm now waiting for the phone call to go to the hospital so could be any time within the next few weeks. I saw your post and it's very worrying as I also have a dent in the side of my left breast as if someone has pressed two finger tips into it. I'm only very small anyway so I noticed it. I can't feel a lump though. How are you doing now.?x
