Brown discharge.. stressy!

Hi everyone!

Been stressing out a lot recently and it's taking it's toll! I'll apologise in advance for the long speil I'm away to write!

I'll also start by saying I'm 100% not pregnant, and I have had smears done which came back fine. (Routine one in February 2019, and another one due to this situation). I'm a 27 year old female, 5'4 and weigh about 9-9.5 stone.

So it all started September last year (I think)

I was just away to leave the house and I got two really sharp pains in the left side of my abdomen, only lasted a few seconds each time but they felt really sharp. Anyway, I didn't think much about it because I get completely fine before and after it so I went out as normal and a couple of hours later I went to pee and when I wiped I seen a pink blood. Strange because my period had been finished for about a week. Anyway, again I didn't overthink it too much, thought it must just be a bit of extra period my body decided to spring on me.

Since then, I had experienced very very light pinky/browny tinges on the toilet roll but only occasionally. I did start getting a bit worried so I went to the doctors in November who done a swab for STI's and infections, so when I got my results they said i didn't have any STIs however I had slight BV so was given a weeks course of anti-biotics... but the weird pink/brown discharge kept happening, most of the time about a 1.5 weeks after my period. Or at least that's when I'd notice it..

I googled and googled (bad, I know) and it kept saying this was probably due to ovulation so I just kept putting it down to that, then I'd forget about it until I experienced it again which would then make me stress out again. This happened on loop until about July this year. I bit the bullet and tried the doctors again. They performed another physical examination and swab which came back clear however during the exam the Dr thought she maybe felt something but also said she wasn't sure if it was just in my bowels..lol. Anyways she organised an ultrasound for me incase it was fibroids, but they also said this looked normal (abdominal ultrasound only, they said they could see enough and didn't need to do a transvaginal US)

So after this I decided to go Private to try get to the bottom of it. This doctor performed another physical exam and said she couldn't feel or see anything wrong with my cervix and she prescribed me with a 3 month course of the contraceptive pill Microgynon incase it was hormonal, and she said we will re-assess in 3 months. I'm half way into my first month on the pill, started it on the first day of my period as instructed. My period has ended but I've had pretty constant brown discharge since, sometimes only tinges the toilet roll but sometimes there is dark brown stringy bits or some sort of really thin tissue lining??? Sorry i'm not sure what to call it (sorry for the TMI).

The doctor also said if I am still having issues then we would look into getting a Hysteroscopy done, but I reeeeeallly do not want one as I've read horrible stories about it. So I would rather go for any other option.

No one had ever offered any blood tests while on the NHS or private, I had to ask the doctor for one when I had my private consult. Not sure what type of blood test it was but I think it was just iron levels and stuff which came back normal.

Only other thing I can think to add is one time I went out for a 13 mile bike ride and when I came home I was bleeding slightly. But other than that when I go for a run or whatever it has been fine.

I was convinced I had PID from the first BV infection if the anti-biotics didn't clear it up properly. I asked the private Dr about this and she said it can't be that because I've had other swabs and they came back clear, but I've read online that PID wouldn't flag up on a test (not sure how right that is though)

My partner (female) has also experienced symptoms that sound like PID so this also made me lean towards it being related to that) She hasn't bled though but she has had pain and trouble urinating and stuff so unsure if it's related at all.

I've googled other stuff like endometriosis, PCOS or polyps and fibroids and honestly nothing else sounded like my symptoms. I've never had bad periods, just the usual cramps but it hasn't ever stopped me living life normally. I have felt slightly more bloated and tender in my abdomen during the month since all of this, plus some very mild cramps even when I’m not on my period. Not horrendously in pain or anything, just mildly uncomfortable. I'd also like to point out that I haven't noticed any bad smells along with the discharge.

Honestly even wondering about perimenopause??? It kind of seems like my body is taking longer and longer to "clear out" essentially, after my period ends??? I guess that probably happens before menopause. My age makes it unlikely but still a possibility.

My obvious big worry is cancer. I'm scared that although my smear came back normal, what if they have missed something?

Again, I'm sorry for the novel but if you've made it this far then thank you, I appreciate it so much!

If any of you have experienced any of these symptoms and think I should be worried or ask for any tests etc in specific then please please let me know.

Thanks in advance xx

  • Hey! I'm so glad I found this chat, this is the same issue I have had on and off since my daughter was born in 2018.

this month I have had a brown discharge most days for the entire month after my period at the beginning of the month.
blood tests done, normal, swabs done, no infections all normal.
waiting time for ultrasound is 3 months!! So I'm so anxious waiting for it now thinking it's going to show something more sinister!!

trying for a baby too - which is another massive stress! Does anyone know what the actual test is for cervical cancer, is it the ultrasound?

    thanks!

  • Hi Lauren

An ultrasound is to check your pelvis but is not a diagnostic test for cervical cancer. If someone had abnormal cervical cells, the standard process would be to remove them and have them sent to pathology for checking. Punch biopsies are another test used, taking tissue samples from the cervix for analysis. These are the tests which identify cervical cancer.

It sounds like there is no suspicion for cervical cancer for you, and there are other conditions which could explain your symptoms, hence the ultrasound. Had there been any suspicion of something serious going on, you would have been referred more urgently.

  • Tell Dr you're really nervous and they can give you a sedative before any procedure. Honestly most nurses and Drs have EVERYTHING when it comes to pain relief etc.  I had my laparoscopy under general anaesthetic and your tummy aches after but it passes.  Honestly be brave it's worth it for answers x

  • I have something similar going on myself. I am 17 years old and have had brown discharge for about a week now. I know for a fact that it's not dried blood as its more of a brown similar to a poop colour once you've wiped(sorry only way I can think to describe it) my discharge also has a smell similar to vinegar. I've also been experiencing pain especially in my left lower abdomen. Sometimes the pain is worse and it will suddenly come out of no where. I have a doctors appointment next week and my doctor may perform a swab and scan. I suppose I just want to see if anyone has any answers or experienced anything similar.

  • I have read all these posts and am so pleased I have read them as it makes me not feel alone.

I have very similar situation, clear smear, normal scan and normal bloods. When I had my smear though she did say my cervix looked inflamed/sore but nothing else came of it.

I used to be on the depo injection but came off as its not great long term, this was about a year ago. I have not had any replacement but have noticed the random brown looking discharge, its not all the time nor is it enough to be a period and isn't red colour.

Feel fine in myself but I do get a very random sharp pain in my left lower side that is very sharp but not long lasting from time to time.

I am at a complete lost what to do!?

  • Hi hope you have some answers now. I have similar issues but I just want to advise all of you of one thing. If you have to have a hysterescopy please demand it under general anaesthetic. I went for mine last week and nobody really told me the truths of how much pain it can cause. I am no wimp I have had many gynae procedures but this was barbaric! Trying to open your womb which has been closed for many years without any pain relief is just horrendous. Forget taking the ibuprofen before you go this pain is like no other! Luckily the Dr and nurses were wonderful and recognised straight away my agonising screams meant he would only perform it in theatre under general anaesthetic. I am on a fast track 2 week emergency appointment the nhs have been brilliant. The day after my failed hysterescopy I was booked straight in for my pre op check and now waiting to attend and then be called for the hysterescopy. I am 52 on hrt for nearly 5 years all my smears ok I have had 2 mammograms all clear. Started with a 3 week bleed and I don't normally bleed along with bad cramps pelvic pain also pain before this once during sex never had that before. Was diagnosed with bv and thrush first damn my new hot tub think this was the cause. Then swabs came back abnormal and here I am. Already had the transvaginal scan my lining is 9mm and they couldn't see my womb due to all the scar tissue. I had a c section so guess this caused it? So....really I don't know much until I have the hysterescopy. I have been bleed free for 2 weeks and now started brown discharge for last 2 days. Let's hope ladies we all get good news soon. Take care x

  • Hi Fannyann,

so sorry to read the way you have been treated throughout your whole experience. I keep hearing from more and more women about their terrible experiences with gynae problems and it's just not good enough. But I'm glad to hear you are back home now and being well looked after by your family!

For about a year now I have been suffering from a brown discharge that can also contain what appears to be fresh blood, that starts around a week after my period finishes. I need to wear a tampon most days as the flow can be quite heavy.

I should say say that I am 43, have no children, have not been on the pill for years and my periods have become quite irregular- sometimes up to 2 weeks late.

i also suffer with very sharp pains on both sides of my lower abdomen - really very uncomfortable and distracting and difficult to treat.

Anyway, about 2 months ago a blood test to check my cholesterol levels also revealed that I was quite significantly anaemic - not something I have suffered with before. I had to go in to see my GP who asked me lots of questions including about my periods. Now the periods themselves are not what I would could 'heavy', and when I explained them to my GP she did agree that they sounded normal. Now due to embarrassment or my own confusion I neglected to tell her about the discharge between periods. I have been referred for checks on my stomach and bowel to see if they are the cause of the anaemia and so far they don't seem to be. I am now convinced this is all going to be gynae related.

something else I should mention is that I was sexually assaulted when I was in my early 20's and I now have an abject terror of anything to do with 'that department' as it has become known in my world. I think fear is what stops me from bringing the problem up as I know what is probably going to follow. A huge part of me wishes that I could just have a hysterectomy and just be done with the whole thing. I will never have children, I don't need any of my 'equipment' and in my mind it would solve everything.

im so sorry to rant on, it's just that this is the first place I have found really where I can talk about this specific problem with other women who are or who have experienced the same problem. I wish you well as you continue with your recovery. Don't overdo things, take things at your own pace and keep standing up for yourself. Thanks for listening. Xx

  • I have not seen a period for about eight years but the last week everytime I wipe myself I am getting g clots and stuff it Brown stuff is it something to worry about please help am I am stressed about it

  • I'm so glad i came across this post. Although I'm not glad for all of you suffering!

Bit of background info.. I've had spotting for years. Was told it was cervical ectropian. Had numerous pelvic exams, internal ultrasound etc. Nothing untoward. Normal smears up until my last one. High risk HPV but cells were normal. Recall in september. I'm on the mini pill. My periods have pretty much stopped and instead i am getting browny/pink discharge. It kinda smells. Wondering whether it's BV or something sinister. My back hurts too. :( sick of worrying! Anyone else have suggestions or similar experiences? Is it the pill? I've always been regular with periods until i started it and i used to be heavy.

  • Hi I would like some advice as I'm starting to get extremely worried.

I'm only 19 and Ive had quite normal periods so far, few times I've had maybe heavier periods with clots but other than that they've always been on time and lasted 4-5 days.

but for the past year I've been experiencing pain during sex a lot of the time it hurts mainly in the lower right side of my abdomen. And I seem to bloat really badly straight after. And sometimes the pain is quite bad. I also just had what I think was my period but it hasn't stopped yes im currently on day 18 of bleeding, the bleeding is more like spotting and changes colour all the time. One minute it's light pink next it's darker. But a lot of the time I have brown creamy discharge which also sometimes is stringy

Has anyone else had any of these problems ?
