Brown discharge.. stressy!

Hi everyone!

Been stressing out a lot recently and it's taking it's toll! I'll apologise in advance for the long speil I'm away to write!

I'll also start by saying I'm 100% not pregnant, and I have had smears done which came back fine. (Routine one in February 2019, and another one due to this situation). I'm a 27 year old female, 5'4 and weigh about 9-9.5 stone.

So it all started September last year (I think)

I was just away to leave the house and I got two really sharp pains in the left side of my abdomen, only lasted a few seconds each time but they felt really sharp. Anyway, I didn't think much about it because I get completely fine before and after it so I went out as normal and a couple of hours later I went to pee and when I wiped I seen a pink blood. Strange because my period had been finished for about a week. Anyway, again I didn't overthink it too much, thought it must just be a bit of extra period my body decided to spring on me.

Since then, I had experienced very very light pinky/browny tinges on the toilet roll but only occasionally. I did start getting a bit worried so I went to the doctors in November who done a swab for STI's and infections, so when I got my results they said i didn't have any STIs however I had slight BV so was given a weeks course of anti-biotics... but the weird pink/brown discharge kept happening, most of the time about a 1.5 weeks after my period. Or at least that's when I'd notice it..

I googled and googled (bad, I know) and it kept saying this was probably due to ovulation so I just kept putting it down to that, then I'd forget about it until I experienced it again which would then make me stress out again. This happened on loop until about July this year. I bit the bullet and tried the doctors again. They performed another physical examination and swab which came back clear however during the exam the Dr thought she maybe felt something but also said she wasn't sure if it was just in my bowels..lol. Anyways she organised an ultrasound for me incase it was fibroids, but they also said this looked normal (abdominal ultrasound only, they said they could see enough and didn't need to do a transvaginal US)

So after this I decided to go Private to try get to the bottom of it. This doctor performed another physical exam and said she couldn't feel or see anything wrong with my cervix and she prescribed me with a 3 month course of the contraceptive pill Microgynon incase it was hormonal, and she said we will re-assess in 3 months. I'm half way into my first month on the pill, started it on the first day of my period as instructed. My period has ended but I've had pretty constant brown discharge since, sometimes only tinges the toilet roll but sometimes there is dark brown stringy bits or some sort of really thin tissue lining??? Sorry i'm not sure what to call it (sorry for the TMI).

The doctor also said if I am still having issues then we would look into getting a Hysteroscopy done, but I reeeeeallly do not want one as I've read horrible stories about it. So I would rather go for any other option.

No one had ever offered any blood tests while on the NHS or private, I had to ask the doctor for one when I had my private consult. Not sure what type of blood test it was but I think it was just iron levels and stuff which came back normal.

Only other thing I can think to add is one time I went out for a 13 mile bike ride and when I came home I was bleeding slightly. But other than that when I go for a run or whatever it has been fine.

I was convinced I had PID from the first BV infection if the anti-biotics didn't clear it up properly. I asked the private Dr about this and she said it can't be that because I've had other swabs and they came back clear, but I've read online that PID wouldn't flag up on a test (not sure how right that is though)

My partner (female) has also experienced symptoms that sound like PID so this also made me lean towards it being related to that) She hasn't bled though but she has had pain and trouble urinating and stuff so unsure if it's related at all.

I've googled other stuff like endometriosis, PCOS or polyps and fibroids and honestly nothing else sounded like my symptoms. I've never had bad periods, just the usual cramps but it hasn't ever stopped me living life normally. I have felt slightly more bloated and tender in my abdomen during the month since all of this, plus some very mild cramps even when I’m not on my period. Not horrendously in pain or anything, just mildly uncomfortable. I'd also like to point out that I haven't noticed any bad smells along with the discharge.

Honestly even wondering about perimenopause??? It kind of seems like my body is taking longer and longer to "clear out" essentially, after my period ends??? I guess that probably happens before menopause. My age makes it unlikely but still a possibility.

My obvious big worry is cancer. I'm scared that although my smear came back normal, what if they have missed something?

Again, I'm sorry for the novel but if you've made it this far then thank you, I appreciate it so much!

If any of you have experienced any of these symptoms and think I should be worried or ask for any tests etc in specific then please please let me know.

Thanks in advance xx

  • Hi,

I'm so glad I came across this forum. I've been suffering with brown discharge exactly a week before my period for 2+ years now and almost every single test has come back negative (which of course I'm glad about but still no answer).

I came off the pill march 2019 after 9 years being on it as I thought it's obviously my hormones. I'm working with a few people who all suspect it's high estrogen domiance but now I'm just wondering if it's old blood trying to get out my body because I have light periods after coming off the pill.

Would love to hear an update from anyone else on this matter.

    Thanks

  • Hiya!

Im not sure if this forum is still active but I'm also having the same problem. It started around 5 months ago, and every time I try and go to the doctor it gets flushed out with an actual period. Quite recently I had the discharge for around 10 days, then had 2 days of a heavy period with some large clots. That lasted for around a week and then I was back to normal. But then a week later the brown discharge started AGAIN! It's been over a week now and I still have it. There is no bad smell or anything, a part of me thinks it's just old blood taking a while to come out as it look like pieces of my uterus lining is coming out (I think).

I have had my implant now for just over a year, so I'm not sure if that's making it happen? It's never done anything like this before so I don't understand why it's starting now. My implant usually begins to hurt a day before I start my period, but I've had no warning with the brown discharge. I don't know if I should be worried? I've had many cervix checks this year for other reasons and everything seems fine so I'm not sure what to do? I've done my own self swabs and the doctors have also done some and they all come back clear, even though the swab is clearly brown. Any advice???

I'm only 20 so the chances of menopause are slim (but never zero)

    Thank you!!

  • Im so glad I've come across this.

    31 Female. No Children.

So I started on the mini pill (Zellata) in June 2019 as I was on the combined pill (Microgynon) for about 8 years which was great until I started having migraines with aura for a few months. I went to the doctors and they told me to change my pill.

I didnt want to have the injection or anything that was going to take it ages to come out of my system as I want to start a family in the future as I am in my 30s and I didnt want to be without any contraception. So I decided to go on the mini pill.

I am up to date on my smear tests. Had my last one end of 2019.

I first started on the brand Zellata (Desogestrel) straight away the day after the combined pill as directed. I had a period during that week of starting it then nothing at all.

When I was having periods every month, I didnt have particulary heavy periods. They lasted the usaul 3-4 days but it was a proper period.

After being on the mini pill for just over a year (having Desogestral & Zellata prescribed every so many months) in July 2020, I started randomly having extremly light bleeding (brownish colour) which would only last for like 2 days or so. Nothing again for a few months, until October 2020 which again was like a brown colour (like you do at the beginning and at the end of a period). I had the usual period/pelvic pains I used to get, but it didnt come to a proper period, this lasted about 2-3 days.

I went to my GP about this, and had a pelvic exam and a swab taken and everything came back fine. I have also took pregnancys tests too which is all fine.

I was still concered why this was happening after being on the mini pill for over a year and googling which is always a bad idea. I heard about this pill can be make periods irregular. I was still having the pelvic ache which was located towards my right groin/hip and leg. I then asked to have a pelvic ultrasound and transvaginal ultra sound for peace of mind as I was worried there was somothing wrong with the repoductive parts and I want to start a family in the future. I knows these scans check for alot, this all came back fine,so no problems there. The doctors dont seem concerned, but I have asked for a blood test for peace of mind again to make sure I dont have a hormone imblance or something. Blood test came back fine.

End of November 2020 I have come on a period again with full body aches, period pains like I used to when I was regular but its is such a light period, not a proper one.

And the same happens 3 weeks later I came in with very light brown discharge bleeding. The thing is I can't say when my period is as I don't have a regular none anymore. So I don't know if this is normal or not.

I am still putting up with the pelvic right side dull ache which honestly feels like it could be a pulled muscle, thats lasting months. I have been doing stretches to help relieve while also waiting for a physio appointment to see if it is a pulled muscle that's causing the aches.

    Any feedback would be great.

  • Hey

i have just read your post and hoping that you're feeling ok and everything is getting sorted, i have also experienced similar to yourself but along side other weird things!

my October period was late by 1 week my November late by 2 weeks and my December was non existent but around 1 week after I should of come on I started noticing brown/black discharge, not enough to want to wear a tampon etc but enough to notice it on a daily basis and more so when going to the toilet and wiping & on a few occasions noticed like small stringly clots but definitely more of a discharge texture and not a period but that weird dark colour

this is normally normal for me at the very end of my period as in a few days after kind of like a final clear out, but for my period to be completely missed and replaced with this is strange to me and also this has been going on a lot longer than what a normal period would last

over the last months I have felt very weird within myself, and feel like there's always something wrong On a daily basis

from suffering with headaches everyday for over 4 weeks, to anxiety that I've never suffered with has now become a real problem where I'm worried every single day that something really bad is happening and my body is trying to tell me, to neck pain that comes and goes, recently had a couple of occasions at night where my legs mostly but feels like my whole body is shaking/trembling, my eye sight has got slightly worse as in way more blurred than normal and I last got my eyes checked only 1 year ago, also I've had a swollen lymph node in my neck which has slightly gone down but it's been there for around 3 weeks and I went to the GP 2 weeks ago about it and they said to wait 2 weeks and nothing has changed nor have I experienced like a infection or flu that may of caused this, chest pains which started a few months ago and were happening every day and then got better and then over the last couple weeks they have started again as in a Sharpe shorting pressure feeling in chest and near heart ( what it feels like anyway ) it's all the weirdest feeling but just generally not feeling normal at all

I am slightly worried as all these things have been happening for months which makes me feel like I'm going crazy as the only thing that flagged up on a blood test was my bilirubin levels which falls within Gilbert's syndrome but i think it's goes away above that...

I have spoken to many different doctors over the last few months and nothings really come about apart from the bilirubin and when I spoke to a private GP regarding my periods and this current situation she said it sounds like PCOS but I did not tell her about all my weird symptoms and just gnerelly not feeling right which I've never ever felt in my whole life

I have only just read about an overactive thyroid and I feel as though out of everything I've been worrying I may have ( like really extreme stuff, googling isn't always the best option) I feel as though an overactive thyroid is very relatable but I haven't had any bloods or tests done but I will be speaking to the GP this week

I am only 24 and I have my first smear on Monday which I may have to move again due to this brown discharge as I know you can't get it done if you're on your period

many advance would be much appreciated or anybody who has suffered from anything above and has been diganosed or even a thyroid problem and what your symptoms were

thank you & wishing you all good health for 2021

  • Hiya so i've never got my period and i got brown discharge last month in my pants for 7days i thought it was my period and it was brown but i didn't need to wear pads so it must not of been and now i've got it again brown discharge in my pants after a month that's the same as period but i'm not sure if it is pleaee help

  • Hi i have no idea if this forum is still active but i thought i may  aswell ask.. i am only 17 and ive been getting my periods for 5 nearly 6 years. My periods have always been massively irregular it has never been 28-31 days long and im always skipping periods but recently ive found a lump on the opening to my vagina and ive experienced brown spotting for the last 4 days..my vaginal wall also sticks out and is hard down one side but i have no pain or discomfort though.. should i be concerned

  • Hi!! I have just read your post and I have had the exact same experience. I have been having these problems for 5 years. I'm 49 this November. I was offered a full hysterectomy 3 years ago as well as the womb ablaige(where they burn the lining of the womb) which I decided to have. They inserted a merina coil and said that would solve the problem. They did detect a small cyst on my right ovary that was 2.5cm and basically brushed it aside saying nothing to worry about. Anyway all was well for 18 months. No bleeding and pain etc and I was happy. Then out Fi the blue I was doubled over with pain in one day for 12 hours to the point that I couldn't walk. So called my GP crying saying I needed help to find out what was going on. I then had to wait 8 weeks for a scan.  I was told by the sonographer that when my ovary had released an egg that it was bleeding into my ovary amd that wasn't normal. So I then waited for my appointment with my Surgeon. Who basically said that there was nothing wrong amd the cyst had now gone but I have one on the other ovary. So I asked why I had been told by the other lady that my ovary was bleeding amd he got annoyed amd said I don't know but I will be asking why she told you that.
he then proceeded to tell me I probably had Chrones disease as that's what the pain probably was and wanted me tested for that.  Seriously would know being a chef and  a brother that has chrones I DO NOT A HAVE A BOWEL PROBLEM AMD NEVER HAVE!!!!

anyway he reluctantly agreed to give me a hysterectomy amd I left the consulting room in tears and was comforted by the nurses amd said he'd had a bad day. This was 2 days before lockdown last March.

I have severe pains in both ovaries most days and constant 3 days before I have brown disgusting blood. That lasts for about 4/5 days and this happens every 2 - 3 weeks.

I have my hysterectomy tomorrow and I can't wait. So luckily enough I'm having the brown blood as we speak so I hope they can finally see what I've had to put up with! It is not exceptable as a woman to be left like this amd have to put up with this.  My doctor said can't you just put up with it until the menopause is over? So I said no I can't amd it's not fair for me to have to suffer.  It's affected my mental health and I've been crying all week and I'm a bit nervous about them finding something else wrong. So let's see what happens.

sorry for the essay as well, but you are not alone and do not let this get you down. Stand you're ground and demand a solution.
I hope you get sorted soon.

    wish me luck!!

    xxx

  • Hi!!

sorry I haven't got back to do much of you, I hadn't received any notifications until now!

so sorry for all of you still having issues, there is nothing worse when things aren't right with your body but tests are coming back negative.

things have been alright for me (touch wood) since I came off the 3 month course of microgynon.. I haven't had any other random bleeds so far and it has been a good few months so I'm hoping my dr was right and it was just a case of my hormones needing balanced out.

@FannyAnn that sounds absolutely awful, sorry you've had such a hard time with this. I have my fingers and toes crossed for you that the op will solve the problem, let us know xx

  • Hi @Fannyann I'm wondering if you have had your operation and how you are feeling? Having read all these posts especially yours, its become apparent that certain gynecologist need educating on PID and other Acute Disorders that thousands of women suffer with. What interested me the most was how you mentioned your consultant fobbed you off and upset you which seems to be a similar pattern I am hearing.

So my story is I got diagnosed 15 years ago with PID which then went into Fitz Hugh Curtis Syndrome...lesions around my liver capsules. All I can say on the last 15 years is hell. Alot of hospital admissions , antibiotics, scans and bloods that always come back clear and generally being fobbed off for many years. I had 3 laporoscopies which showed a left blocked follopian tube and in hindsight should of had it removed years ago, but 2 years ago started my menopause and things got even more interesting to say the least.

I have a fab hrt specialist who thinks the best option after many years and because of my intolerance to progesterone is a Hysterectomy.. I feel like I have fought for so long for a procedure that quick frankly should be the patients decision. I know all the risks associated with the procedure when you have lots of adhesions and I also know it may not stop the pain but as a human you have the right to say what you want done to your body! My message to anyone is don't give up as there is a massive issue in the UK with women bring ignored and also the fact that if you can't work or hold down a full time job and relationship because of the years of pain and problems you get no help whatsoever.

I have no gone private and booked myself a pelvic and tummy MRI scan which should pick up most things unlike a basic ultra sound and the reason I had to go private is because I was denied one through the NHS ! I was always told I have bowel issues now or bladder even though the evidence is there and I have been told I've got PID. The problem with this disease is consultant's are clueless .Only 3 weeks ago I went Into AE started on IV antibiotics and told to come back a week later for more and then the next consultant that week decides he won't give me the last dose...its a shambles and now left with pain, brown discharge, unwell, nausea and fatigued. Oh I forgot to mention if they can't get to the bottom off it the next option anti depressants ! They don't work also! I've refused anymore investigations as I am not putting myself through anymore when they can do a simple MRi.

And for the girl that mentioned about hysteroctomy procedures...do not do it without being put to sleep!!!! My experience was awful I was sick and nearly passed out ! In 2021 you would think there is a easier way to look at the human body than putting someone through so much pain ..

My advice guys don't give up ! Get a private consultant..demand a MRI and push if your not happy about something!!

    X

  • Hi Everyone!!
    Im home and healing.

The operation went well.  I had it done keyhole. I have not cuts on my tummy, all internal.  The pain was quite bad as I'm so small,  I had to have the pain blocker removed, and I was quite distressed when I came round. Felt like they were taking 20 meteres of rope out of my FOO lol. Anyway the care was so bad I discharged myself after being left for 2 hours with no pain medication. So I was home around 24 hours after the op. I've been very tired amd think they may have given me too much anaesthetic as they couldn't wake me up properly. Should have been about 1 - 2 hours and I was about 4 hours. Anyway I told about 3 different doctors I had lost weight since my pre op assessment but no one checked.
I was told that they would send everything off to be checked to see if there was anything that they'd missed and was causing my pain etc.
I'm finding it very hard to sit still. Lol but am being well carered for at home by my husband.
the main discomfort is wind get that peppermint tea ready it really helps.

inebthung I will say is, DO NOT GIVE UP. If you are suffering and in pain DEMAND to be dealt with. No one deserves to be left in pain amd discomfort.

oh and I was never diaginised with anything just told it was normal for my body to react when I ovulated. So I just kept on saying but that should t be painful so deal with it. I'm a strong person and can stand up for myself and have pushed amd pushed to get this sorted. So if you need some support please message me
