Brown discharge.. stressy!

Hi everyone!

Been stressing out a lot recently and it's taking it's toll! I'll apologise in advance for the long speil I'm away to write!

I'll also start by saying I'm 100% not pregnant, and I have had smears done which came back fine. (Routine one in February 2019, and another one due to this situation). I'm a 27 year old female, 5'4 and weigh about 9-9.5 stone.

So it all started September last year (I think)

I was just away to leave the house and I got two really sharp pains in the left side of my abdomen, only lasted a few seconds each time but they felt really sharp. Anyway, I didn't think much about it because I get completely fine before and after it so I went out as normal and a couple of hours later I went to pee and when I wiped I seen a pink blood. Strange because my period had been finished for about a week. Anyway, again I didn't overthink it too much, thought it must just be a bit of extra period my body decided to spring on me.

Since then, I had experienced very very light pinky/browny tinges on the toilet roll but only occasionally. I did start getting a bit worried so I went to the doctors in November who done a swab for STI's and infections, so when I got my results they said i didn't have any STIs however I had slight BV so was given a weeks course of anti-biotics... but the weird pink/brown discharge kept happening, most of the time about a 1.5 weeks after my period. Or at least that's when I'd notice it..

I googled and googled (bad, I know) and it kept saying this was probably due to ovulation so I just kept putting it down to that, then I'd forget about it until I experienced it again which would then make me stress out again. This happened on loop until about July this year. I bit the bullet and tried the doctors again. They performed another physical examination and swab which came back clear however during the exam the Dr thought she maybe felt something but also said she wasn't sure if it was just in my bowels..lol. Anyways she organised an ultrasound for me incase it was fibroids, but they also said this looked normal (abdominal ultrasound only, they said they could see enough and didn't need to do a transvaginal US)

So after this I decided to go Private to try get to the bottom of it. This doctor performed another physical exam and said she couldn't feel or see anything wrong with my cervix and she prescribed me with a 3 month course of the contraceptive pill Microgynon incase it was hormonal, and she said we will re-assess in 3 months. I'm half way into my first month on the pill, started it on the first day of my period as instructed. My period has ended but I've had pretty constant brown discharge since, sometimes only tinges the toilet roll but sometimes there is dark brown stringy bits or some sort of really thin tissue lining??? Sorry i'm not sure what to call it (sorry for the TMI).

The doctor also said if I am still having issues then we would look into getting a Hysteroscopy done, but I reeeeeallly do not want one as I've read horrible stories about it. So I would rather go for any other option.

No one had ever offered any blood tests while on the NHS or private, I had to ask the doctor for one when I had my private consult. Not sure what type of blood test it was but I think it was just iron levels and stuff which came back normal.

Only other thing I can think to add is one time I went out for a 13 mile bike ride and when I came home I was bleeding slightly. But other than that when I go for a run or whatever it has been fine.

I was convinced I had PID from the first BV infection if the anti-biotics didn't clear it up properly. I asked the private Dr about this and she said it can't be that because I've had other swabs and they came back clear, but I've read online that PID wouldn't flag up on a test (not sure how right that is though)

My partner (female) has also experienced symptoms that sound like PID so this also made me lean towards it being related to that) She hasn't bled though but she has had pain and trouble urinating and stuff so unsure if it's related at all.

I've googled other stuff like endometriosis, PCOS or polyps and fibroids and honestly nothing else sounded like my symptoms. I've never had bad periods, just the usual cramps but it hasn't ever stopped me living life normally. I have felt slightly more bloated and tender in my abdomen during the month since all of this, plus some very mild cramps even when I’m not on my period. Not horrendously in pain or anything, just mildly uncomfortable. I'd also like to point out that I haven't noticed any bad smells along with the discharge.

Honestly even wondering about perimenopause??? It kind of seems like my body is taking longer and longer to "clear out" essentially, after my period ends??? I guess that probably happens before menopause. My age makes it unlikely but still a possibility.

My obvious big worry is cancer. I'm scared that although my smear came back normal, what if they have missed something?

Again, I'm sorry for the novel but if you've made it this far then thank you, I appreciate it so much!

If any of you have experienced any of these symptoms and think I should be worried or ask for any tests etc in specific then please please let me know.

Thanks in advance xx

  • Hi Ladies,

So my op went well, i had laparoscopy to look for any growths, check my ovaries and follopian tubes for functionality and all they found was a small amount of endometriosis (ovaries and tubes were all healthy). They removed the endometriosis and inserted a merina coil as a different form of contraception and all with only 2 small incisions which have been closed with glue. I was signed off work for 2 weeks and am now slowly getting back to normal. I had a lot of heavy period pain for about 10 days after the op and bleeding and that seems to have stopped. I have an appointment this Friday as i've got a horrible smell which based on others experience of Merina coil, it could be BV (joy). The merina coil is meant to help those with endometriosis so we shall see whether things get easier to whether i stay on it for the 5 years..

I have stopped bleeding and spotting but there is still pain (if anything more than there was before but this could be from the op).

I still need to wait for my smear in February to get the all clear on my cervix as they didn't look at this in the laparoscopy. But my gynaecologist is hopeful it was jus tthe endormetriosis causing the issues.

He also advised me that if you think it's low estrogen, this is really hard to test for as your estrogen level continually changes throughout the month so could be higher or lower depending when the test was taken..

Nothing was mentioned about PID but i will ask the doc about this Friday.

    Hope you're all well! x

  • Hi Lauram, I was just reading the forum as having similar symptoms myself. I wondered if you had any update from your tests? I hope you are ok xx

  • Hi! I'm slightly worried also. I'm 19 years old and have been having some problems. I'm currently having the contraceptive Microgynon 30 and had diarrhea over a weekend which led to an early period as I essentially "missed" 3 pills. I normally have my period for 6-7 days though I experienced a period for about 3 days as doctor told me not to take the 7 day break and move on directly to the next packet (I was due to finish the packet I was on). After this 3 day period I've been spotting for about 11 days, it still hasn't stopped and I'm worried. It's a dark brown sometimes pale pink and thick consistency. Does anyone have advice?

  • Hi [@Avidgoogler...]‍

Sorry for the late reply. Glad your op went well! Fingers crossed things start getting better for you now.

nothings changed for me yet, still on microgynon for the next 2 months before I can take it any further xx

  • @MrsAF Hi! The results I had previously came back fine but I was still experiencing the weird browny/pinky discharge every other day of the month. The dr said it might be hormonal so prescribed me 3 months of Microgynon to see if it sorts it out, which I would have preferred if they done more tests to figure out if it was definitely hormonal first. In my eyes, going on the pill will just mask the problem due as it changes the hormones anyway, I think as soon as I come off the pill the issues will just continue.

So far, the first month of the pill I was still experiencing discharge, the second month so far has been ok but on the last couple of pills I had maybe 2 days of pink discharge but I thought that was maybe just my period trying to break through. Just finished my 7 day break and so are so good on this month so far x

  • @AC1308 hi! To me it sounds like you're getting prolonged discharge because your period tried to start but because it didn't get a chance to finish completely it's still trying to breakthrough?? I'm not entirely sure though.. sorry I can't be of more help

  • Hi [@Lauram10x]‍ thank you so much for replying. I'm glad you're ok and having a better month. I know what you mean about masking the problem, even though I absolutely hate tests and being prodded and poked, I would rather know for definite what's wrong.

Luckily I have private medical insurance via my husband so have decided to use that now to try and get to the bottom of things. I am just waiting on my referral letter. I have waited 3 months and just can't go on like this now, I live in fear every time I go to the toilet at what I might find!

Please do keep me updated how you get on and I will do the same xx

  • I have private through my work aswell so after ages of putting it to the side I decided to go private too, but unfortunately they were the ones who put me on microgynon straight away! Through NHS I got multiple physical exams and swabs, they put me for an abdominal pelvic ultrasound incase I had fibroids but they couldn't see anything, and then I saw a private dr who said she thought we would try microgynon incase it's just hormones. I've been convinced for ages that it's going to be like early onset menopause, but everyone says there's no way it could be that due to my age (only 27)

however I just can't seem to find anything that suits my symptoms. My periods have always been (kind of) irregular but I never actually missed a period. I've had very light ones and recently ones that don't come to much, like it might just be "old blood" but never more than that.

not sure. I have this sachet of pills and then I have to let the dr know how I get on, but I'm almost 100% sure that it's just going to go back to the constant brown discharge. If so then I'm going to push for some blood tests or something to find out more about hormones and if it could be anything to do with early menopause.

i know how you feel about dreading going to the toilet, I was like that too, and it first started in about September last year.

hope you're alright and things improve for you soon!! Xx

  • Hi Laura. I've had exaclty the same for years. Having to.wear a panty liner as ruining all my pants else. I Had all the tests and a hysteroscopy which honestly wasn't too bad. They also took biopsys at same time again not too uncomfortable. They found absolutely nothing...their conclusion was a very slight shedding of the lining of the womb inbetween periods and because it comes out brown it's just old blood. They said it was nothing to worry about and can occasionally happen. I.would recommend you have the hysteroscopy, it literally is minutes of discomfort. Good luck

  • Hi Cazz,

it's been very interesting reading everyone's stories, as I share something similar and it's getting really frustrating.

I am also on the contraceptive pill have been for about 15 years, over the past 3 years I start spotting about 7-10 days into starting my new pill packet, dark brown blood.

Are you taking contraception Cazz? Like you mine is ruining all my underwear, I've had smears and swabs all come back negative.
I've no idea what to do moving forward, so frustrating.
    thanks
