Esophageal biopsies

I'm currently waiting for biopsy results taken just over 6 weeks ago. I've had problems with esophagitis, GERD, a hiatus hernia, polyps, ulcers.for some time and have connective tissue conditions. Having experienced dysphagia for a few months I was referred to the Upper GI surgeon, who requested the biopsies. The surgeon explained my symptoms could be connective tissue related, could be dysmotility related or could be cancer. Esophageal cancer is rare but with the delays due to Covid getting results back, even with the fast track to see the specialist it's now about 4 months since I started to experience dysphagia. I've already had an infection and breathing difficulties due to aspiration, having a poor immune system it can be a bit of a challenge dealing with infections. I live with pain and poor health every day so an extra problem is nothing new to me, I've adapted my diet to the swallowing issues and there's plenty of useful advice on how to manage dysphagia but I'd prefer to know what it is I'm dealing with. The not knowing isn't easy. Things are definitely taking much longer, difficult times.

  • Hello Siouxie_22

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having to cope with some additional health problems recently. It sounds as if it's been quite a difficult time for you adapting to the dysphagia.

Did the hospital give you any idea about how long the biopsy results might take? I certainly don't think that it would be a problem if you called the Consultant's secretary for an update as it has been quite a while now. It may be that the results are back and that they're waiting for your case to be discussed at the MDT.

The not knowing is hard and it's natural that it can leave you feeling more anxious about things. I do hope that you have some news soon.

    Best wishes,
