Failed hysteroscopy, anyone else had this happen?

Hi

I am wondering if anyone else has had a failed hysteroscopy. I went last Tuesday but due to "the worst scarring" she's ever seen considering I've never had any surgery, it was impossible for her to navigate to complete the hysteroscopy.

My scans showed "thickening" but I haven't been told a specific measurement as some ladies have.

She did manage to take biopsies but I'm worrying about what has caused all thus scarring. On the screen it looked like somebody had decorated with fake spider webbing for Halloween. You couldn't make anything out.

Hoping somebody can offer some reassurance please.

  • Hi NanaJax,

If you type the words failed hysteroscopy in the blue 'search forum' box above you should be able to find other members you can chat to about this but hopefully some of our community will pick up on your post soon and reply to you here as well.

Hopefully it won't be long before you get some answers but if you'd like to have a chat with one of our nurses about this then you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,

  • So sorry you had a failed hysteroscopy. In my case the doctor couldn't find a way into my womb despite saying the cervix was clearly visible. She got a bit flustered and after multiple failed attempts did a pipelle biopsy instead. So I have no idea what the camera might have seen inside me.

The only reassurance I can offer is that my endometrial biopsy came back clear and blood tests taken to "appease me" - I was so shaken by my experience - showed nothing except anaemia, CA125 was very low which was very good news.

I was subsequently given a second ultrasound to see whether there was any reason for the doctor having difficulty accessing my womb and to make a map (!) in anticipation of a second attempt. But when I went back to clinic, the Consultant was loathe to do a second hysteroscopy (I had been hoping to have a polyp removed) and only offered me a General Anaesthetic and an endometrial ablation, which I decided not to have. The Consultant was adamant it was a lifestyle choice and I did not have cancer, so I chose to tough out my heavy bleeding (likely caused by a submucosal fibroid which had been identified on my first ultrasound).

My new good news is that I haven't had any bleeding now for six weeks. Since I'm nearer 60 than 50, I might finally be nearing my menopause.

Sorry I can't be more helpful in response to your specific query as I have no idea what scarring could be caused by/ might indicate. For all I know my womb could look equally bad!

I do really empathise with you as it can be hugely disconcerting when procedures don't go to plan.

Hope all the biopsies come back clear. Sunny xx

  • Hi,

I went to the hospital on 16th January.

I only found out on Thursday night when I phoned surgery to see if my GP had received anything regarding this. The receptionist told me that there was something on the system on 17th January stating that it was a “Failed Hysteroscopy!!”  I’ve received nothing from my GP or Dr that did the procedure.

But wait for it. Whilst I was out on Friday I had a missed call from the number I’m usually called on to offer me an appointment for surgery. I don’t understand why they didn’t call me on my mobile as they have that number too.

I have a telephone appointment on Wednesday at 7.40am with the GP who sent me to get things checked for me.

To be honest. I feel badly let down by the Dr who was supposed to carry out the Hysteroscopy and my GP.

i can only hope that I get some information on this very soon.

  • Hi Lizze

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience too. At least I knew mine hadn't been perfomed successfully at the time.

I did go back and have another one done by a more experienced Gynae doctor instead of hysteroscopy nurse.

Hope you get some answers soon.

  • Thanks Jackie.

     I really appreciate your support.

It was a  Gynae that failed me. I’m just waiting to see what’s to happen next.

  • Apologies Jackie.

I meant to say. I hope everything has worked out well for you?

  • Hi Lizzee

Had full hysterectomy in March 2021 so I'm just being monitored now which will continue for 3 years. All good so far with no signs of anything sinister returning. I was lucky that my cancer was only Grade 1 and caught very early. Plus I'm older so having hysterectomy far easier on my than on younger ladies,  especially those who hadn't completed their families.

  • Hello Jackie,

I had a telephone appointment with my Consultant on Friday. She gave me 4 options.

    1. Do nothing.

    2. Try Hysteroscopy for third attempt.

    Ive said No to these.

    3. Ultrasound. She would contact me with results as to what’s to happen next. I’ve opted for this.

    4. Hysterectomy. She said she’s quite anxious about me as I’ve been on Tamoxifen for 10 years and can cause tumours in my womb. I’m hoping this isn’t the case.

It’s 10 years today since I had my Mastectomy. 13/3/13. I should be celebrating. But I’m now worried I’ve got cancer again.

I’m just trying to stay positive.

I’m glad you’re doing well and your message has made a difference. Feels encouraging to go ahead with Hysterectomy if I have to.

I’m now trying to find out how I come Off Tamoxifen. Do I just stop taking it? Or do I have to reduce it? I’ve left a message for Breast Cancer nurses. Hopefully I’ll get a quick response from them.

    Take care.
