Colonoscopy pain

I had the colonoscopy yesterday 7/9/2020, the pain was excruciating, I have had 2 children and had treatment for breast cancer so I thought I had a high tolerance to pain. But obviously not!!!. I had entonox, fentanyl, midazolam and oxygen none of this worked I was told to stop moving and just use the gas and air, I asked them to stop,  but was told to turn on my back and keep using the gas and air. I was made to feel like I was making a fuss about nothing and I should just be quiet and let them get on with it. I have never been treated with such disdain by any other department in the NHS, I think the staff should have had a little more compassion and consideration. I felt like they had a job to do and were going to do it and 'I should just shut up and let them get on with it'. I think they need training in how to treat patients, I would like to say I have been treated by many departments in the NHS during my cancer treatment and they were all brilliant very compassionate and caring. 'Maybe the colonoscopy departments should take a leaf out of their book'

  • Hi

I can relate to you with the pain.

I find them painful although I have sedation and gas / air.

I have had bowel cancer twice and both times had surgery to remove part of my bowel. Although now I only have a third left I still find it painful and now they use a thinner scope of which I make a point of reminding them at my yearly check.

They have always been really nice though asking me if I could put up with it a little longer or would I like them to stop.

It is unpleasant but found my cancer both times so it has to be done.

Hope you get good results after your ordeal x
