Waiting and driving myself crazy

Had a PET-CT scan on 2nd September, results were with chest consultant on the 4th September. I still haven't heard but spoke to secretary today who said I was down on the list to be discussed on Wednesday and that either the consultant or lung nurse would ring by Thursday afternoon at latest.
My question is would they make me wait a week to tell me it's cancer? Also, would they tell me before I was referred to a cancer team or just refer me when the results can through?

I'm clutching at straws really and over analysing everything.  I'm assuming they are given telephone results because of Covid??
thanks to anyone who responds xx

  • Hi, I just wanted to let you know I'm at the same stage, maybe a few days ahead and I'm doing the exact same but trying to keep it together with every ounce of my being! It is hard, but I take solice in the fact that during the waiting game, the doctors, specialists and nurses are discussing each case and making an informed decision on the best course of action for each individual person. I had my original biopsy on June 24th and the NHS have been pretty constant keeping me up to date or arranging tests within the two week period. I had my pet ct scan on 26th Aug and had a phone call the next morning, just letting me know that due to the bank holiday weekend, the specialists weren't having their discussion meeting until the Thursday, which even though made me concerned due to the longer wait, I am relieved I knew when to expect the call. I then received a callback from the same nurse that Thursday to give me a little more info on my results. She said that the cancer is isolated and that the specialists intend on getting me in for surgery and treatment of oral chemotherapy. She also said she couldn't entirely confirm the extent of the cancer or when surgery would be (when I asked she said maybe 2 weeks but she didn't want to guess as she didn't know how bad the backlog of patients became during covid so that was out of her hands in my eyes). She said I'll get a phone call at some point from the specialist at the hospital doing the surgery, then they'll give me full details. I'm still anxious waiting but relieved that I know it could be worse for me. For me, it was about a week after my biopsy that I had a phone call to say they had found melanoma cancer and that it had spread (metastasis). They told me at the same time that my biopsy had already been sent off to biology, where they test your sample with different treatments as they take a week for results to show (already getting the ball rolling before I even had the scan). I then had a bit more of a wait to find out when the PET CT was and once again after the scan. Telephone consultations are the way forward since covid and you will only go into hospital if absolutely necessary. Also, with regards to why they'd keep you waiting after the scan, I think it's because various doctors and specialists review your scan and get other opinions on it etc, then they have their weekly meeting to discuss your case before they call you. They should give you a point of contact for whenever you have any questions or worries. I hope that this somehow puts you at ease, knowing you're not alone. Good luck x
