Mole changed colour

I recently had my little girl and since noticed that a mole I had on my leg has changed colour and has gone black. I had this checked by a doctors when I noticed the change. Upon inspection the doctor in his opinion said it wasn't anything to be concerned about but to keep an eye on it. This is a relief but in the back of my mind I can't help but worry and think what if he was wrong?? Anybody had this and if so, did everything turn out okay? Should I get a second opinion?

  • Hi,

I think you should get a second opinion, if only to settle your mind. Pregnancy hormones can change existing moles or new moles can appear - it doesn't mean they are cancerous but they should be checked out. I know people whose mole has gone black & the mole was benign - whilst my mole went black & it was melanoma - so I suggest that you re-contact your GP practice. Ask to see a different GP - if they have one that specialises in dermatology even better.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • Hi Angie, Thank you for your response. Did you notice any other changes in the mole itself other than the colour change?

  • No, it just turned darker until it was black. A friend who I was visiting in Australia pointed it out and I sadly didn't get it checked out for a year! My GP didn't think it was a problem but referred me to be on the safe side! It turned out to be Stage 1b melanoma which has a 97% chance of cure. However I was in the 3% that has a recurrence/spread and 13 years later I was diagnosed Stage 3. It was probably my fault for leaving it a year so that's why I urge people to see a GP quickly and, if necessary, get a second opinion and/or push for a referral.
