Coughing for nearly a year

It started in October 2019, had a big viral chest infection, then in december I got a big bacterial chest infection. Ever since then ive had a nagging cough that just wont go. Ive tried anti-reflux medicine, antibiotics, steroid nasal spray, Prednisolone, blue inhaler and for the past 8 weeks ive been on a brown inhaler. Had an xray taken around 10 weeks ago and all showed clear.

its a tickly feeling urging me to cough. It feels like its in my lower windpipe possibly in my lungs? Bringing up no phlegm, no other symptoms at all. I do cough more after exercise too.
I'm 32, 6ft, dont smoke, play football once a week and am just worries thia thing will go undiagnosed. Im looking for anyone thats had anything similar and if it was treated?

thank you

  • Hi M3 and welcome to the forum.

It's good to hear that your x-ray came back clear although I'm sure it must be very frustrating not knowing what is still causing this urge to cough.

If you're worried do be sure to go back to your doctor to discuss your concerns and if you have more than one GP at your surgery you could try seeing another doctor for a second opinion. To find out more just click here.

I hope this helps and you're able to get some answers soon.

    All the best,

  • Hi,

I had a constant cough for 6-12 months or so before being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma with lung involvement, but my x-ray very clearly showed a large mass in the lung. CRP and WBC were elevated too, lost weight and had bad shoulder/neck pain. The cough and pain disappeared immediately after starting treatment. I trust that your scan covered all areas in the lung?

Unlikely it's that, but if you feel there's something wrong keep pushing for an answer! I was young and seemingly healthy with unconventional symptoms,  and many doctors dismissed me for years.

    Best of luck!
