Suspected Colorectal Cancer

Hi Everyone

I just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced similar to me. I have just been referred to the hospital under the two week rule for suspected colorectal cancer.

I am 34 years old and have been unwell on and off for the past two years. I was referred to the hospital previously in September 2018 due to a lump in my neck that I was told was a reactive lymph node. The lump is still there and hasn't reduced in size.

In the last two months I have been put on folic acid tablets due to my folate level being low and have had a number of different infections which have been treated with antibiotics.

Alongside these infections I have noticed unusual spotting and also dark blood (I think) in my stools a couple of times.

I have had a full examination by my GP and have blood, urine and stool tests which have all come back normal. The GP has said that they would rather overinvestigate than underinvestigate which is reassuring and also mentioned it is unlikely I have cancer due to my age.

I am quite worried as I have felt generally unwell for the last two years and have not had any clear diagnosis. The lump in my neck has always niggled in the back of my mind wondering what the lymph node is actually reacting to in my body. I am trying my best to keep a rational head and take things step by step.

Has anyone had any similar symptoms like mine? And what was the outcome for you?

Thank you and I wish everyone well

  • I'm glad your test results have come back normal so far Starlet but it's understandable why you'd be worried given the referral. As you've said, it's good your GP is being thorough and as mentioned here, 9 out of 10 people who are referred on the two week pathway are not diagnosed with cancer.

Of course this will still be an unsettling time until you know more but I'm sure some of our members who have been on a similar pathway will share their advice and experiences with you soon.

Fingers crossed more good news comes your way after you've been seen at the hospital.

    Kind regards,
