Awaiting results at 19, have been told I may have PV

I'm 19 and am waiting for my results. I went into hospital on Sunday with intense abdominal pain for what turned out to be kidney stones, but I was also hit with bad news when they found that the haemoglobin in my blood was too high. The doctors sat me down for around an hour and explained that they think it might be PV blood cancer. I've had the blood tests redone to double check and further genetic and hormone tests to know for certain whether it is PV, but I'm full of anxiety. I didn't process it when I was told because of the morphine, but now I feel like a ticking time bomb. What am I going to do if I have an incurable cancer at 19? You never think it'll happen to you. I just want to know what I can do to keep myself going while I wait two or three weeks for the results to come back. Any advice or other people's experiences would be good. I just hate sitting here and feeling helpless.

  • Hi charlie.2909,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read what you're going through at the moment - it's never easy while waiting for results. Try not to get ahead of yourself with assuming worst case scenarios. Many people say it helps to keep busy to keep your mind off things, and to try to carry on as normally as possible. Also do things you enjoy that are relaxing and that help to distract.

Try to avoid looking things up online or dwelling on it too much. Hopefully before too long you'll find out more and will find out about any next steps.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
