Dermatology - appointment on Monday, what will happen?

Hi all,

I was referred to dermatology for a growth close to my eye in June. It was an urgent referral but due to Covid its been delayed. I had a call yesterday with an appointment for Monday.

I'm slightly anxious about it and would like to know whats likely to happen during the appointment on Monday?

And advice would be great

  • A couple of years ago I had a dodgy mole.  First appointment was consultant looking at all my skin and confirming mole needed to be removed and biopsy done. Went back for small operation under local anaesthetic which was ok. I just didn’t look and surgeon very kind. About 6 stitches. Even got the bus home! Results were benign so all good.

  • Thank you, my growth is just under my eye so I'm apprehensive about the possibility of removal etc.

Will they check moles/skin or will they concentrate on the growth that's changed?

  • My experience was that he closely examined all my skin and discussed sun damage and a large mole I’ve had since birth. He also reassured me about a couple of odd bumps that I pointed out. He explained that they would take out a larger area than just the mole but if the biopsy was positive for cancer I would have more removed at a later date. It was just below my shoulder on my arm so no need for me to discuss plastic surgery. I’m not particularly brave but found the operation quite bearable. Good luck.

  • Thank you, I think I'm over thinking things. Hopefully Monday will go well and I have nothing to worry about.

As it's grown and changed maybe they will remove it as a precaution

    Thank you for you help

  • Hi,

They will probably look at your mole using a dermascope (hand held microscope) - it shows any unusual activity in the cells of the mole. If they think it needs further examination they will arrange for it's removal for biopsy. Sometimes it can be done there & then, depenadant on the size of the removal, staff availability etc or they arrange an appointment for day surgery at a later date, usually 2 weeks later but Covid may delay it.

Don't worry too much about the location of your mole - it will be removed by a plastic surgeon who is used to doing facial surgery so there should be no problem.

If you have any questions about something that the consultant hasn't covered, don't be afraid to ask.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)

  • Thank you doe your reply, its very helpful.

I'm hoping it's nothing but I'll keep you updated

  • Hi my appointment was fine this morning. The dermatologist examined me and decided that the leison needed to be removed so it was done straight away using local anaesthetic.

I'm fine apart from a bit of swelling and bruising. It's been sent away for testing so should have the results in a few weeks.

Thank you for your help and reassurance xx

  • Hi,

It's good that they were able to remove it today. I hope you aren't waiting too long for the results and that they are good news. Let us know how you get on. xx

  • I've just had my results after a long 8 weeks and I have basal cell carcinoma

The dermatologist said I will need further surgery to remove anything that may be left and may need a skin graft/plastic surgery as its so close to my eye.

He's ringing me back next week with a plan x x
