Surgical biopsy on the throat for possible cancer diagnosis

Hi,

I am writing on here to ask for some help and advice due to my symptoms and having recently been told about a booking for me to have a surgical biopsy done on my adenoids, palatine tonsils and lingual tonsils.

I have been suffering for over a year now with originally just a raised lump/lymph gland on the left side of my neck, but then I started suffering with shooting pain in my neck, which then got worse with severe sore throat, cough and aches in my throat and back of my tongue. I have also been struggling with swallowing at times, tasting blood in the back of my throat and feeling like there was something in my throat that was getting in the way but it wouldn't budge. More recently, alongside this horrendous pain and discomfort, I have started to experience bouts of tinnitus and a muffled sound/sensation in my left ear and I have also been suffering with vertigo and night sweats. I have had an US on my neck, which confirmed Level II raised lymph glands and then had a CT, which also confirmed this as well as having "prominent nasopharyngeal soft tissue and bilateral enlarged tonsils". After speaking to the ENT, he has referred for me to have an emergency biopsy on these two areas, with a possible tonsilectomy that will be decided at the time of the surgery. I am messaging on here, as I feel a bit unsure about what to expect and with the worry about what the results will be. I am very confused about how I am feeling, as part of me hopes they find the cause of all my pain and problems through this biopsy, no matter what the outcome so that I know what it is and can try to treat and stop it, and so I am not left still wondering and suffering with the unknown. But then, of course I don't want the problems and worries that come with a cancer diagnoses. So I wanted to message on here, to express my problems and worries, and to please ask for advice with how other people were when they went through similar situations, with the worry and the actual biopsy procedure. Any help or advice will be very much appreciated, thank you in advance!

  • Hello 12pconlon,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. I hope you won't have to wait too long for your biopsy. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting for this biopsy and for its results.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lucie,

Thank you for your reply and your very kind words! It IS horrible with the waiting game, especially as I've waited for over a year for anyone to take my symptoms seriously, and I only just got someone to listen and do an initial ultrasound, due to my sudden and severe pain and further increase in worsening symptoms. Although, I have finally been contacted about having a pre-op telephone call on Friday next week (due to covid-19). So this is good news at least! Hopefully I'll only be waiting a couple more weeks for the biopsy to be completed.

But I really hope that whatever the result is, I will soon have answers and there is a way to treat and get rid of all this pain and horrendousness!

I really hope to hear other people's stories and advice soon, as it's nice to know that I'm not alone in this situation :)

    Thanks again, Paige
