Awaiting biopsy results Breast Cancer

Good Morning,

I thought for a little while whether to post here or not, but actually I think I need too..

So a little bit of history ; I'm 36 and back in the beginning of June so brushed my hand over my chest and felt quite a big mass on my boob. I thought that's not right, I get it checked out. I wasn't concerned and figured it's probably hormonal changes etc, the gp was great and referred me. I was on the 2 week list for breast clinic, the consultant had a feel agreed it didn't feel normal and said it's most likely glandular changes. Due to Covid no ultrasounds will be done today come back in a few days. So, I go back I'm scanned. They don't seem bothered and say its 'hardened glandular tissue' and I'm discharged. Again I'm not too worried, but don't quite agree. So I keep an eye on my lumpy boob..

Fast forward a couple of weeks and my breast changes massively, its hot to touch, the mass is growing and I have orange peel type skin around my nipple and a definite crease down one side of my breast, it's also 2 cup sizes bigger than my other breast now. My daughter 15 tells me I should go back, I think 'nah ill be ok' but I have a feel around and notice my lymph node in my armpit is swollen so I go back to the gp last week. I'm checked over, and immediately I'm told this isn't normal changes and I'm being referred back to the clinic. I'm given a course of antibiotics as a precaution of infection due to the redness and swelling.

Yesterday I have clinic. The consultant was really lovely, drew a tennis ball sized circle on my breast and says that I need another ultrasound and possibly biopsies.

I was scanned by another consultant,  he's said there's no fluid, it's most definitely a large mass. So cysts and abscesses are ruled out. He also said there's some nodules on my lymph nodes, so biopsies were taken from them and my breast. That wasn't too bad to be honest, just uncomfortable and the click from the instrument made me wince a bit. (I'm a little tender today, but manageable). The two consultants then spent time together talking with me out of the room.

I was then sent back to the other consultant, who asked if I had anyone with me this made me laugh as the letter stated that due to covid attend by yourself, so obviously I was on my own..

Anyway I asked if it was something sinister she said that they can't say it is until they have the results, but her and the other consultant are very concerned. So obviously this hasn't given me very much confidence at all. I've been informed that there is a mdt meeting next week and I need to go back for a mammogram and results next Thursday.

I hope you are all well wherever you are in your journey

  • Hiya,

I had my biopsies taken Thursday and the radiologist told me she was worried with what she saw and the consultant told me it looked like cancer. I'm now awaiting the results of my biopsy. Like you I am preparing for the worst but hoping for the best.
The bruising on my boob is awful! I'm putting it down to the fact when I went for a mammogram to check the clip was in the right place they couldn't find it so I was squashed in to all sorts of positions thank goodness I was numb!!

hope all goes well with you.

  • Hey Jen,

it's crap isn't it, I'm sorry to hear you're in the same boat.

i had my biopsy on Wednesday, mines bruised but it turning yellow now, the lumps a lot bigger then it was but I'm putting that down to trauma/swelling and hopefully it'll go down again soon.

do you know when you'll get your results? Mines on the 26th x

  • It is !!

They told me the lump will seem bigger after the biopsy. So yeah That's probably why yours is feeling bigger. TBH I darent feel mine. It makes me feel !

The consultant said he meets with the MDT once a week on a Monday, so he was trying to get my results back for tomorrow so they can discuss treatment for me then see me. I'm hoping he sees me Tuesday but he did say he'd ring me when he gets the results to tell me then meet me when they have a plan.

The wait is awful isn't it? I find I'm better when I'm not at home. I can't sit and think then.

  • I'm glad you've told me that, I was panicking about it swelling. Typically I have an itchy flu bite right below the biopsy site! So I keep unconsciously itching it! Otherwise I don't think I'd dare feel mine either.

its so strange! Each hospital seems so different in regards to procedure, I'm happy mine was so streamline, they booked me a results appointment there and then and even asked me if the date suited!

yes, iv found today hard just sitting, iv been doing loads of outside work, I had a drain to unblock and some wall pointing to do so that's kept me busy. But today with the rains been hard. I'm back to work tomorrow, first day since lockdown, I'm abit nervous.

  • Oh no!!! Hope the bite stops itching soon! I tried sleeping on my front last night.....bad idea!!

Yes each hospital is different. I've not had the best experience with mine. I was initially told they didn't have any clinics so I wouldn't have been seen within the two week window.

I've just handed my notice in at work because I'm supposed to be starting uni in September!!! The breast care nurse told me to continue with it, so I am. Good luck at work. It will probably be a welcome distraction?! You will be fine. I've worked from home and gone into work to do childcare bubbles and at first I was super nervous but actually once I was there I was fine.

  • I think swelling and bruising is quite normal after the biopsy, but it shouldn't be red hot or very sore, then it might be an infection.

I had my biopsy almost 2 weeks ago and my breast is still neon yellow, and the area around the lump is fairly swollen. My consultant saw it on Friday and was not concerned.

The wait really is horrible, and I've been very lucky with how fast they moved. I had a one stop breast clinic appointment on Monday almost 2 weeks ago with mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. At that point they said all looked harmless / likely benign papilloma. I got results that Friday, and it showed invasive breast cancer. Then I had an MRI and a needle biopsy of one of the lymph nodes the following Monday. The MRI was clear apart from the one tumor we know about (about 1 cm). They lymph node was cancerous.

I'm having a lumpectomy and partial lymph node clearance tomorrow afternoon.

I know I'm lucky it's all happening so fast, but I've only known I have cancer for 8 days and here I am packing for surgery. Urgh!

Wishing you both positive news very, very soon!

  • Hi everyone,

i was just wondering if anyone could help. My mum has recently had an appointment and waiting for biopsy results.

She had a grading of the likelyhood of it being cancer and wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of what this is? It was out of 5 and I just want to find out a bit more about it so I can help my mum.

    thank you!

  • Hi [@john1995]‍

That's likely a bi-rads grading. 1 means the radiologist thinks it's looking harmless, 5 means they're 95% certain it's malignant. Regardless of the bi-rads grading, your mum won't know for sure until the biopsy results are back though.

Hope this helps and I guessed right!

  • Hi. I hope you dont mind me asking so long after your original post but I have a similar size lump which has been diagnosed as grade 2 invasive ductal. Just wondered how it turned out for you? Thanks. Sara
