Cervical cancer biopsy.

Last year I went for a smear, results can back I had mild changes and hpv infection. I had a colposcopy and they said it was minor changes and just to have a repeat smear in a year.
Recently had a smear test and again same results went to have another colposcopy and I thought it would be the same as before go in and they send me home saying I have nothing to worry about but it wasn't. They ended up taking a biopsy, and now I'm worried sick I could have cancer..

has anyone else been through something similar and what happens next if the results come back that they are cancerous? Or if they come back clear? I'm only 26 and would like more children, Does any treatment after higher the risk of not being able to have children? Properly thinking the worst but I can't help it! Just want the results to come back sooner rather than later

  • Hello Saucy123

I'm sorry to hear that you're worried about your recent cervical screening results and subsequent biopsy. We know that many women find this a worrying procedure.

You can find some information about cervical cell changes on our website here and there's lots of information available about HPV and cell changes on the Jo's Trust website

If you'd like to talk to one of our nurses about your concerns then please do give them a call on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm). I'm sure that they will be able to offer you some reassurance.

    Best wishes,

  • Hey,

I know it's hard to not worry but please don't worry about the biopsy. I'm 24 and had my first smear test in July which said HPV positive and boarderline changes. I was invited to a colposcopy for them to look into it further. They took multiple biopsies from me which I was told they always do to make sure they cover everything. I said I know people who have been and not had biopsies and the nurse said it depends what hospital you are with and what area you live in. Sometimes they do treatment there and then and sometimes they just take biopsies. I was told that my cervix didn't look like boarderline and in fact it looked like very high changes and treatment would be needed. However I received my biopsy results and it actually came back at CIN1 no treatment and to come back for smear in 12 months. I understand how you feel waiting for the biopsy results I kept thinking the most horrible things and wondering why they took them not knowing they do with everyone. I even made my mum sleep in my room with me to stop me overthinking and searching everything on google. I called the hospital after 9 days to check my results and they were in so you could  maybe call them and find out early.  In regards to the problem having children after any procedure I asked this as was told originally I had high grade and it needed to be treated. They told me it shouldn't effect you getting  pregnant  it is very rare that it does and if they have to treat a lot of your cervix they can do something where they put a little stitch in to help your cervix give the support it needs when you fall pregnant and then I think they take it out before you give birth. Also with the biopsy they do it so see if the smear was also correct in what grade it picked up for like their own research and to confirm what treatment is needed. I hope my story has helped and if you need anyone to talk with I'm here. I know it's easier said than done but please don't google anything and please try not to worry. Also remember every hospital is different some tell you things over the phone some don't and some take biopsies and some just treat you there and then. Wish you all the luck and always here for a chat xxxxx

  • Thank you so much for your reply and sharing your experience with me made me feel so much better now and less anxious.
that's brilliant news that it wasn't high grade and only cin1 still a pain that you have to have yearly smears but hopefully they will go back to normal on there own. It concerned me more with the biopsy because last time they said it was fine and nothing to worry about and now th taking a biopsy makes me think this time it's not the case.
I must admit I did google pretty much everything and it made me think the worst so I've defiantly learnt my lesson not to google stuff!
thank you so much for all the useful information xxxx

  • I honestly wouldn't worry when I had my biopsy done they kept saying my cervix looked really inflamed and it was quite bad and my report actually says high CIN and was in shock to hear it was only CIN1 I'm going to have a private 6 month smear to be on the safe side. Sometimes you can have something called an angry cervix so it can look worse than it actually is. My friend worried me cause she had treatment there and then when she went and they did biopsy on me and hers was CIN2 so it all depends on the person doing the procedures that day. Even if it is high they do the same thing for CIN3 as they do for CIN2 and I know a few people who have had it and had them treated and had nothing since. Remember these cells can take over 10 years to progress into something serious so try not to worry. If you have any questions just ask me as my mum has had it done as well so we can both answer any questions you have. Just keep busy and call the hospital on like day 10 to ask if your results are in. If it helps I have horrible pelvic pain everyday and have had some bleeding but I may have something called PID - pelvic inflammatory disease which can be treated so if you have any pain or bleeding remember it may just be something simple not the horrible thing we are all worried off. Much love xxxx
