this is petrifying

hi, im 16 (17 next month) and ive just been referred by my doctor to the breast specialists to have further tests done as i have one breast a lot larger than the other. i have to go to all my appointments alone due to covid and im scared. ive been told that i have to have tests done to check for cancer and i have to find out all results alone too. i dont know how im going to be able to do the appointments alone. it was scary enough going into the doctors alone

  • I'm so sorry that your having to go to these appointments alone, but please learn from the mistakes of others on this forum and don't back out of them. At your age it's highly unlikely to be anything sinister (not a medical proffessional).

Could you not FaceTime or put them on speaker phone if they really can't come with you.

  • I'm definitely going to be attending the appointments. When I get there I'll ask if I can FaceTime my mum while I'm being told any important information so that I don't feel so scared and alone. I've been reading up and I know it's rare at my age so I'm feeling a little more positive now. My appointment is in just under 2 weeks so not long to go now

    HI Doglover,

Welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry to hear why you've joined us. Who has told you that you have to attend all appointments on your own? If it wasn't someone from the hospital, it might be worth phoning your consultant's secretary to ask if you could bring your mum with you because of your age.

Even if they don't allow your mum to attend the initial tests, they will sometimes allow you to have someone with you when you get your results.

We nearly all have odd sized breasts, so especially, given your age, I hope that nothing untoward is found.

Please stay in touch and, let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I'm going to ask to have my mum with me for my results at least. Hopefully due to me only being 16 they'll allow it. I'm trying not to stress out too much with everything. I get my gcse results the day after my appointment at the hospital so I have a lot going on right now. I'll keep you all updated with everything and hopefully I'll be able to tell you it's good news

  • Hey hun, I have just turned 19 and  had an appointment at the clinic last week due to swelling in one side and a red patch. I was really nervous before the appointment aswell, especially cause my mum couldn't come in for support. Once you go inside though everyone is super friendly and you will be made to feel at ease. I really wish I didnt worry so much about my appointment as it was completely fine and over with so quickly . Try not to get too worked up about your symptoms too, as I've learned from this forum, that google always provides the worst case scenario when searching symptoms and not the most probable conditions such as infection, fibroadenoma, hormones, normal changes etc.. Good luck for your appointment though! Always here if you need to chat. Tegan Xx

  • Thank you so much, I know that after I come out of my appointment I'll probably be thinking that I was silly for getting so worried and worked up. Every doctor I've seen so far have been lovely which is nice. I hope yours comes out to be the best outcome possible xx
