Oesophageal Cancer

Hi everyone,

I'm new here!

Basically my dad has been diagnosed within Oesophagus cancer that has spread to the liver. That was back in January/February, he has also been lucky to have chemo since corona virus has kicked off, chemo is the only thing they can do as it has spread.
He had a scan after 3x rounds of chemo, and it showed the liver and oesophageal tumour has shrunk. Plus he is both eating and drinking fine.
It's just a worry as he has now had an 8 week break from treatment, then it's more than likely that it will have got bigger/spread again.
There are so many emotions too with dealing cancer, just praying that it hasn't spread even more etc.

  • Hi Charlte212,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read what your dad is going through at the moment. I can imagine this must be very difficult and I can understand your worries about the break from treatment. You don't mention why he has had the break from treatment, but if you have concerns about this it's best to speak to his doctor or medical team if you can.

It's good to hear he is eating and drinking fine.

It's always a worry when a loved one is going through something like this, and especially the concerns around treatment and so on. Try to take things a day at a time and focus on the wins and the positives if you can.

I hope you find this forum useful too.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hello,

I'm sorry that your dad had been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. I was told yesterday that my uncle has been diagnosed with the same and it has also spread to his liver. He's only in his mid 50's and been given 12-18months maybe 2years to live. We are all devastated. Unfortunately due to covid we can't see him as he lives across country. I've been trying to look for positive cases to keep me optimistic.

I'm glad your dad was eating and drinking fine and I hope since you wrote that post he has gone from strength to strength.

We've been told he's having chemo but it's still a new diagnosis. It's all I can think about. Day and night. If you can shed any light on your dad's situation, I would appreciate it. But can also respect that it's hard to talk about.

Hope you are both doing well

    x

  • So sorry to read everyones posts.

  • Hi

I am so sorry for only just replying to you.

I am so very sorry to hear about your uncle, it's so very sad.
My dad is doing incredibly well at the moment, he keeps having regular blood tests and scans and at the moment they are keeping an eye on it.

How is your uncle doing at the moment? I felt exactly the same as you when we found out in February this year. It was a complete abs utter shock and all we could think about and still is.

I really hope chemo does your uncle the world of good, keeping his spirits up also helps. It must be so incredibly hard having been there myself. I can promise though that if the chemo works this will help a lot. X

  • Hi

so sorry to hear your news!
How is your father at the moment, they said that my dad had it on his liver, lung and lymph nodes too.

Is your dad having chemo at all? X

  • He has been told that his first cycle of chemo starts in 2-3weeks time. Hosital one day, tablets the others.

  • Hi Emma,

Glad to hear that chemo is commencing. That's the same as what my dad had, fingers crossed for positive results with it :). X

  • Hi Emma, this is the same treatment as my husband is starting monday, he is stage four oesophageal, spread to lung, chest lymph nodes etc. Am here if you need to chat or if worried. Its good to hear others saying their family members are responding well to treatment! We must hope for the best x

  • In the same position as yourself, we've just had the devistating news that the cancer has spread from the oesophagus to my dads liver. Gone from they was gonna operate to now all they'll give is chemo.

  • Hi I'm new here & thought I'd share my diagnosis with you. I was diagnosed with Oesophageal stage 4 cancer with spread to liver in Jan 2021, after various tests & scans in Dec 2020 & told it is inoperable, so palliative chemo only. I had my first intravenous bag on 12th Feb & am now on tablets, which I can't swallow, so have to dissolve in warm water. I have 21 days of the tablets & then start again with the drip & onto the next cycle etc. I'm interested in what drugs any of you've been prescribed, if you don't mind sharing. I'm on Oxaliplatin (drip) & Capecitabine tablets. I'm trying to stay strong & positive for my family & myself, but it's hard.
