Hysteroscopy, biopsy and what’s next?

Hi all,

I'm 34 and have been suffering from heavy periods, bleeding in between periods and occasionally spotting after intercourse.
I went for a hysteroscopy at the beginning of the week, and they did a womb biopsy at the same time (it was sooo painful!).
The consultant mentioned that my womb lining for so thick and she couldn't get a good look at all and will need to be given a general so they can (in her words) scrape everything out and look again. Does anyone know what procedure she could be talking about?

also, would they have looked at my cervix during the hysteroscopy? I'm due a smear this October but no ones mentioned any checks for that yet?
I'm also booked in for an ultrasound but I'm not sure what that's actually for as I was anticipating that to have been done before biopsy.

Thanks in advance for any help. I have 3 little ones at home so it's a really worrying time

  • When I had similar done they did a visual check of cervix but not smear. I still had to get a smear done a few weeks later. I was offered an endometrial ablation under general anaesthetic, which may be what they have offered you. I decided not to have it. In my case, consultant said it was a lifestyle choice when I pressed him on this. I had a thick womb, fibroids and polyps but the biopsy showed no evidence of cancer.

Have put up with a lot of bleeding since then. Am considerably older than you (fifties) and was hoping things would settle with menopause - never expecting my menopause could come so late (still waiting).

     Wishing you well. Hugs xx

  • Thank you so much for your reply, I shall look into the endometrial ablation as that may be what the consultant was talking about. I'll also query it further about whether it's essential as I did not have an opportunity to ask questions, and will ensure I still go for my smear.

I hope your bleeding settles soon, can imagine it's becoming annoying over time, all the best x

  • Doctors also did blood tests to reassure me. I was anaemic - guess that was to be expected with so much bleeding. CA125 came out low. As long as I keep on top of my iron levels I have lots of energy so am happy with my treatment choice. I agree that you should discuss this more fully with your consultant. If I had been as young as you I might have gone for the ablation. The procedure does carry some risk if that is what they are doing rather than just a D&C. Ask your consultant to clarify and explain what it is they want to do and any associated risks. Endometrial ablation is usually for older women who have had children and don't want more. My consultant gave me an open discharge so that I could go back in the future if I changed my mind about the ablation.

  • If all they are talking about is looking it might just be a D&C they want to do. Best to ask so no confusion. Endometrial ablation would destroy the womb lining. So maybe more drastic than what you were being offered. x

  • Thank you, that's very helpful, I have 3 children and am not planning on anymore so that maybe why they are considering the ablation. It's not clear based on the letter, so I shall ask the question when the biopsy comes back.
ive had blood tests done, but I don't believe it included the CA as they were mainly checking iron which was too low as expected.

ive actually had a letter today and they are advising that although they took generous biopsies, they want to take them again while under anaesthetic when things are clearer, so that has confused me somewhat as I feel as though I can't rely on the first lot now

thanks for all your help, it's reassuring to hear there's different options

  • It's probably standard procedure to do more biopsies when they do a scrape to be thorough. Good luck with it all and hope you don't have too long to wait.
